The group’s first album since completing their Love Yourself trilogy in 2018, MAP OF THE SOUL: PERSONA marks the beginning of a new thematic chapter for BTS.
There are a total of seven tracks in this album, through which BTS weaves together what they genuinely felt both within themselves and the ever-widening world around them. Through RM’s solo piece ‘Intro: Persona’, BTS asks the fundamental question: ‘Who am I?’. World-leading singer Halsey takes part as featured artist in the lead single ‘Boy With Luv (Feat. Halsey)’ where BTS talks about how true strength and love come from finding joy in the little things in life and reaching out to the world.
The album includes ‘Mikrokosmos’ which paints the world around oneself through human interest and the collaboration with world-famous singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, ‘Make It Right’. In ‘HOME’, BTS finds refuge from their hardships and loneliness where their fans are. ‘Jamais Vu’ is a unit song by j-hope, Jin, Jung Kook and ‘Dionysus’ is a signature BTS hip hop track blasting ad-libs and powerful beats from start to finish.
The theme of the album is centered around Carl Jung’s theory of personality archetypes being the fundamental of character. This album focuses on the persona archetype which is the mask an individual puts up to maintain an image. Based on that theory, there were books written by Dr. Murray Stein who further expanded the theory with a series of books and one called “Map of the Soul – Persona: Our Many Faces”. He has said in an interview that,
Suddenly I was told, I guess a week or so ago, that their new album was titled Map Of The Soul: Persona. And of course, that floored me. Then I was contacted by ARMY— the fan group — who discussed the lyrics and I got a little more familiar with them.
I must say I’m thrilled that they are taking an interest in Jung and my book, that Jung’s message and Jung’s vision is being transmitted to people who otherwise would never hear about him or pay attention to what he has to offer. Because I think what Jung has to offer in this century is a vision of wholeness and a vision of integrity and human rights that, you know, it would be so valuable for people all over the world to come into contact with and to study and to integrate into their daily life. Jung’s message is a very hopeful one: that our conscious is a spark of light. It has much to offer us if we pay attention to it. It gives us inner guidance and, really, it has emphasis on the sacredness of the individual and the importance of the individual to take responsibility for the planet and for the world.
Evidently, the concept photos for the album depict the process of preparing one’s persona.
The album’s title was previously hinted at during an introductory video at the December 2018 MAMA.
Prior to its release, the album managed to surpass 3.02M pre-orders according to BTS’s distributor, Dreamus Company. Thus, projecting to be the biggest sales debut of all time for a Korean album.
This is the first time that a BTS album has surpassed 3 million pre-orders. The group’s previous record was 1.5M stock pre-orders for “Love Yourself: Answer.”
The album broke the all-time record for highest first-day sales and debut week sales on Korean platform, Hanteo. It is also the fastest selling album in Hanteo chart history, having sold 1.4 million copies, more than any album has sold in an entire week.
