The show, written by Lin Manuel Miranda and featuring Puerto Rican Washington Heights residents Nina, Benny, Vanessa and Lincoln (Nina’s older brother who was ultimately cut from the broadway show) was originally titled En Washington Heights and performed as a 90 minute one act musical at Wesleyan University in Lin’s sophomore year.
It was later developed by BackHouse productions and workshopped in the basement of the Drama Bookshop, Manhattan Theatre club and Eugene O'Neill Theater Center before being performed professionally both Off and On Broadway and winning four Tonys and a Grammy.
