Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album, released in October 2012, was inspired by intense emotions and feelings that Swift believes correlate with the color red, with the standard edition discussing frustration, romance, disappointment, and nostalgia. Swift broadened the spectrum with this Target-exclusive deluxe edition.
The Red era kicked off with a livestream in August 2012, in which Swift announced the album and debuted “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” which became her first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Swift admitted during the livestream that she wrote over thirty songs for the album. She later gave one particular reject, “Babe,” to Sugarland, and she featured on the track.
The album received Grammy nominations for both Best Country Album and Album of the Year, but didn’t win either award. Taylor’s AOTY loss made her want to try out something new, so she made her next album, 1989, entirely pop.
Red is certified 7x Platinum by the RIAA.
