Izzy Zuniga (born December 31, 1999), professionally known as funeral, is a rapper, singer and producer from Spring Hope, North Carolina. He is commonly affiliated with the hyperpop scene and the collectives noheart and graveem1nd.
His passion for music began in 2013 making vaporware under the name Dream Culture. In 2014 his Twitter account was suspended, and he used this as an excuse to expand into darker genres and rebrand to his current, more popular alias. In an interview with Infennite Conversations, he explained how he chose the name:
And I’m like, what’s the edgiest name I can come up with right now and stick with?…I’m looking and looking and there’s no [artist by the name of] funeral, so I’m like, “Alright, I’m gonna make that my name”
Though he was initially a producer, funeral first transitioned into rapping with his track “angel shawty,” released in June 2018. He quickly became involved with the growing hyperpop scene and is often considered one of the pioneers of that era of music. He would collaborate with multiple other associated artists on cyphers, including Noki‘s “Among Us Cypher,” lieu’s “crackheads freestyle,” Delto's “Social,” and endie's “Smackdown.”
funeral’s debut album superplastic—named after one of his go-to figurine brands—would release in 2021, being fully self-produced, like most of the rest of his music, and featuring collaborations with Rosesleeves, RIVEN and Conii Miiura. The only track off this project released as a single was “wash away,” in June, with the full album being released a month later in July. Since then he has consistently been releasing 2 albums a year, as well as a handful of EPs and many singles in between.
