Syd Barrett

AKA: Roger Keith Barrett

About Syd Barrett

Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett (January 6, 1946–July 7, 2006) was an English musician, composer, singer, songwriter, and painter. Best known as a founding member of Pink Floyd, Barrett was the lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter throughout their early years. He is also credited with naming the band.

His primary contributions to the group’s discography appear on their debut studio album, August 1967’s The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. He also wrote the last song on their sophomore album, June 1968’s A Saucerful of Secrets.

Barrett was excluded from Pink Floyd in April 1968, due to a worsening mental state and excessive use of psychedelics. He was briefly hospitalized during this period. After Barrett’s departure, David Gilmour took over as their new guitarist.
