Drill is an off-beat of Trap music and was created in the south side of Chicago in the early 2010s. The genre is defined by it’s dark and violent content, and associations with actual gang violence, reflective of the lifestyle that many people in Chicago, London and elsewhere live in.

The most notable scene outside of Chicago would be UK Drill, formed in the city of London around 2012/3. UK Drill would eventually mature into it’s own distinct sound, mixed in with influences from grime and road rap. Because of the grime influence, UK Drill is much higher tempo (~140) and energetic than Chicago Drill.

There are also scenes in Toronto, France, Ireland and New York.
