Schlager (German for what one would call a hit) is a style of popular music which is generally a catchy instrumental accompaniment to vocal pieces of pop music with simple and often sentimental lyrics.

It emerged after the second world war as a depiction of all-things-German and as opposed to American rock'n'roll. Ever since its early days, it has used simple patterns of music, and its lyrics are rarely political but rather romantic or about life on the country.
