Affinity Africa is an owner and operator of financial services companies in sub-Saharan Africa. We pride ourselves on establishing digital-forward and branch-light financial institutions, leveraging fintech and innovative design-led solutions to improve financial access and affordability. Affinity supports the unbanked and under-served by providing every individual and business with accessible and affordable financial services they can trust. The business intends to make digital banking a successful and valuable part of its distribution strategy showcasing a better standard for banking in Africa. Founded in 2013, Affinity launched in Ghana in 2015 after acquiring PayFlex Microfinance Company Limited (now known as Affinity Ghana Savings and Loans) to focus on financial inclusion and financial literacy in a region that is underserved and under-penetrated. Ghana’s banked rate is 40%, where access to capital is even lower at 8%; this cripples MSMEs (micro, small and medium-sized enterprises) and entrepreneurship. Affinity currently supports the lives of 25,000 individuals and we estimate that our products will impact the lives of up to 400,000 by 2024.

Last Friday we held our first media event at our HQ in Ghana and showed a teaser of our new marketing campaign “You are in”, which will be rolling out in the coming months. It was a huge milestone for us after six months of testing and ideating ahead of our major launch. The evening was attended by friends, family, partners, regulators, shareholders, the team and customers. Grateful for how far we have come, and mindful of how much left we have to do in Ghana and in Africa. The speeches were short and sweet, mine copied below: "I am delighted to be standing in front of you all today, a moment I have been dreaming about for quite some time. 12 years ago, I quit my job working for the second largest hedge fund in the world to start this journey. The move was quite controversial, causing lots of my British colleagues to call me “brave”. Now for those of you who don’t speak the King’s English, brave in the UK is not a positive word. The British High Commission is present tonight, they certainly know what I mean. But for us, as entrepreneurs, brave is a positive word. It is part of our DNA. Because it takes courage to believe in yourself, it takes courage to start a business, and it takes courage to ask for support. These are all the necessary requirements it takes to flourish. And these are all the things Affinity stands for. Affinity was created to empower micro, small and medium sized businesses and the entrepreneurs behind them. We do this by providing accessible and affordable banking services. MSMEs are the biggest job creators and financial inclusion drives social and economic development. With financial independence comes access to education, healthcare and clean energy. Getting here has not been easy or quick, but nothing worth it ever is. This journey started with a dream (and an excel spreadsheet), followed by an acquisition in 2020. But it became a reality because of your support and for that, we are truly grateful. I would like to thank Bank of Ghana, our investors, our partners, our board and my fellow Affinatives. But most importantly thank you to our customers, we do not exist without you, and you have my promise that we will continue to listen to you, innovate and serve you. Because without you, we are nothing." #founder #financialinclusion #msmes #digitalbank #smelending #fintech #smebanking #microenterprises #impact Affinity Africa Affinity Ghana Mo Ibrahim Foundation FINCA International Renew Capital Abdul-Jaleel Hussein, CFA Catherine Engmann Bank of Ghana Enza Capital Launch Africa Ventures Grazia Equity ImpactAssets OPUS Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship Yale World Fellows YPO
As part of our partnership, we are delighted to have contributed to this year's Mo Ibrahim Foundation Forum Report: Financing Africa. As a beneficiary of VC funding, we know first hand how this asset class can drive innovation and it is important that it thrives in our part of the world. However, with venture funding comes risk and our founder Tarek Mouganie, PhD makes the argument that investments must be driven by those with an understanding of the local context. The contributors for this year's report include the President of the World Bank, Chair of the African Union, MD of the IMF, President of the African Development Bank, Deputy Secretary General of the UN and President of the European Council. It was great to have Meagan Rabe and Ayodeji Alabi from Visa visit us in Ghana. Since the Visa Accelerator Program, we have been discussing a partnership to launch cards, starting at Affinity Ghana. Digitizing payments is a core strategy to move away from a cash-driven society, improving customer experience through convenience and safety. Thanks to Ghana CEO Abdul-Jaleel Hussein, CFA, for welcoming them. #impact #visa #partnerships #payments #cards #financialinclusion #digitalbanking
