This week, Amnesty International met with the Newly appointed Attorney General and Minister of Justice of Ghana Honourable Dominic Ayine to discuss a number of Human Rights issues we are concerned about and to called for swift actions in ensuring the protection and promotion of Human Rights in Ghana. Among the topical issues were an appeal to the president of Ghana H.E John Dramani Mahama Mahama through the office of the Attorney General to commute all death Sentences to life imprisonment and a step in the right Direction for Ghana to sign the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights aiming at the abolition of the death Penalty. We reiterated the need for a review of the Public Order Act through parliament to ensure that the rights of protestors are respected and protected. On prison improvement, we highlighted the need for progress of the community service sentencing Bill which will help decongest the prisons in Ghana. On Championing Women’s rights, we sought to find out the steps the current government will be taking to ensure that the Bill is signed into law since its passing in parliament in July 2024. We appreciate the office of the Attorney General for responding to our call and to discuss Human Rights issues that are of great importance to us and the Ghanaians as a whole. Salma spent over four years imprisoned on terrorism-related charge for posting tweets in support of women's rights. She spent almost 300 days in prolonged solitary confinement, was denied legal representation, and was then repeatedly convicted on terrorism charges and handed a decades-long sentence. All just because she tweeted in support of women’s rights and retweeted Saudi women’s rights activists. Saudi Arabia’s authorities must now ensure she is not subjected to a travel ban or any further punitive measures.

The sanctions against the International Criminal Court imposed by President Trump betray the international justice system. No one responsible for crimes under international law should be protected in their attempts to escape individual accountability. #amnestyghana
