Director of Programs at Farmed Animal Funders | Fund Manager at Effective Altruism Animal Welfare Fund
This Giving Tuesday, I loved seeing Open Philanthropy's Farm Animal Welfare team recommend the EA Animal Welfare Fund to individual donors. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g9p3DuRd This was the cherry on top of Giving What We Can's recent naming of the EA AWF as the best animal welfare charity alongside Animal Charity Evaluators' Movement Grants! 🎉 https://lnkd.in/gScAnv3J The movement to address the harms of factory farming—which I consider one of the worst moral atrocities of our time—is deeply underfunded. This means it is of utmost importance that every philanthropic dollar in the space is deployed as effectively as possible. Our movement is scrappy and many organizations achieve a disproportionately large impact for funding received. Marginal dollars go far! During my time as a fund manager for the EA AWF, I've served as the primary investigator for 98 grant applications (for which the team recommended and distributed over $1.6 million to 25 high-impact opportunities) and contributed feedback to hundreds more applications, resulting in several more millions of dollars in funding to many more groups. It is a great responsibility, and a deep honor, to manage the fund alongside a powerhouse team of researchers and advocates deeply dedicated to the cause: Karolina Sarek🔸, Kieran Greig 🔸, Neil Dullaghan🔹, Urszula Zarosa, and Ren Ryba. In celebration of Giving Tuesday, I'm highlighting a few of EA AWF's many inspiring grantees: 🇧🇷 Fórum Nacional de Proteção e Defesa Animal 🐣 🇬🇧 Crustacean Compassion 🦀 🇬🇭 Animal Welfare League 🐤 🌏 Global Food Partners 🐥 Learn more and donate to the EA Animal Welfare Fund: https://lnkd.in/gFgEppFT More recommendations across a wider range of theories of change and values are coming next week in Farmed Animal Funders' Cultivating Impact newsletter! We've just published our 2024 yearly review!🚀 This review reports outcomes from our 2023/24 training programme, including three new projects we incubated. We estimate that that our first cohort has added a value of ~$279,000 to the African farmed animal advocacy movement so far. Besides our training programme, we supported the planning of the first AVA Summit in Africa, assisted grantmakers and donors on ~$46,000 worth of grants, helped start an Effective Animal Advocacy Nigeria group and published three major research projects. 🌍In 2025, we plan to: -Complete our 2024/25 training programme to incubate new effective animal advocacy initiatives in Africa and enable participants to take on new roles to reduce farmed animal suffering. -Host our first in-person retreat with our program participants and partner organisations in Kenya after the AVA Africa Summit in July. -Improve our outreach to recruit more high-quality participants for our training programme and subsequently launch a third iteration of the programme for a new cohort of participants later in the year. -Hire additional staff (or external support). We’re always looking for partners to accelerate the growth of the farmed animal advocacy movement in Africa. With our plans now published for the next year, we are actively seeking donations to bridge our funding gap of ~$150,000 for 2025. Whether you can contribute a substantial sum or a small amount, every donation makes a difference. In 2025, your support can help us in the following ways: 💲$5,000 allows us to provide stipends to all our programme participants for a month 💲$10,000 covers our staff salaries for a month 💲$30,000 allows us to provide seed funding to an impactful project that is launched through our programme If you support our mission to build the farmed animal movement in Africa, you can make a tax-deductible donation. 🌟 What a week! 🌟 Last week, we wrapped up an incredible week-long cage-free training at our Cage-free Innovation and Welfare Hub in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. We had the privilege of hosting an amazing delegation from Uganda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania. The week was a blend of: ✅ Theoretical sessions ✅ Hands-on training at our model farm ✅ Visits to local cage-free farms ✅ Learning from some of the leading cage-free producers in Indonesia This experience wasn’t just about sharing knowledge—it was about building connections and reinforcing our commitment to growing a thriving cage-free ecosystem in Asia and beyond. Seeing the incredible work the delegates are doing to advance cage-free farming their countries left us feeling inspired and hopeful for the future of cage-free. A big thank you to everyone who joined and made this an unforgettable (and very fun!) experience. And to our amazing team and partners in Indonesia who made this training such a success!🐔 If you’d like to join us for similar trainings (or just chat about how to go cage-free), shoot us an email at team@globalfoodpartners.com. Let’s keep building a better food system, together! #CageFree #AnimalWelfare #Sustainability #KnowledgeSharing #GlobalFoodPartners
