Taking a closer look at Inclusive Education Policy to Social Inclusion in Ghana Ghana’s Inclusive Education Policy aims to provide quality education to all children, including those with developmental disabilities (CWDDs), in mainstream schools. This policy fosters social inclusion, relieves the caregiving burden, and supports caregivers—often women—who face significant caregiving responsibilities without formal assistance. The African Center for Democracy and Socio-economic Development (CDS Africa), with funding from the International Development Research Centre’s (IDRC) Care Innovation Project, has launched a project to explore the link between inclusive education and unpaid care work in Ghana. By integrating CWDDs into regular school environments, inclusive education enhances CWDDs’ development and independence, reduces caregivers' burdens, and breaks down stigmas around disabilities. The project will assess how inclusive education lessens caregiving demands while promoting wider social acceptance. It advocates for the policy's expansion across Ghana’s public schools to improve outcomes for CWDDs and support caregivers. This approach contributes to gender equity by recognizing unpaid care work, advancing social justice, and supporting a more inclusive Ghana. #InternationalDayofCareandSupport #ScalingCareInnovations #CareEconomy #SDG5 #GenderEquality

Reflecting on CLCD-Ghana's 2024 Global Summer Research Internship Program - Michigan State University Group !!! At CLCD-Ghana, our Global Summer Research Internship Program offers students hands-on research experience and intervention development, benefiting mothers and children in low-income areas. Open to both graduate and undergraduate students, the program includes research participation, expert mentoring, professional development training, and cultural immersion through visits to heritage sites. The first group of the 2024 cohort had an exciting journey filled with learning, volunteering, and exploration. CLCD-Ghana proudly hosted students from Michigan State University, providing them with invaluable experiences that bridged academic knowledge with real-world applications, enriching both their professional and personal lives. The adventure began on Friday, May 10, 2024, with a warm welcome, rest, and a delightful dinner with CLCD staff, helping the students acclimate to their new environment. The first weekend featured a visit to the beautiful Royal Senchi Resort in Akosombo, offering a serene introduction to Ghana. Orientation followed, and the interns commenced their formal duties by volunteering at an Early Childhood Care and Development Center and a Child Development Clinic. Their journey included visits to the Klicks Foundation disability center and explorations of historical sites like Kakum National Park and Elmina Castle. As the weeks progressed, the interns continued their journey by meeting a neurosurgeon at the 37 Military Hospital in Ghana and visiting education and health policymakers. Their last visit was to CLCD-Ghana’s Mobile Clinic before returning to the US. They also toured the Greater Accra Region, enjoying various activities and cultural experiences. The program concluded with a reflection paper due on June 17, allowing interns to consolidate their experiences and insights. Overall, their stay resonated with the vision and mission of CLCD, making a significant impact. A heartfelt thank you to all our interns, staff, and partners who made this summer program an unforgettable experience. Your dedication and enthusiasm have truly made a positive impact, and we look forward to continuing this journey of learning and service in the future. #clcd #clcdghana #summerinternship2024 #michiganstateuniversity #msu

EXCITING UPDATE! Jacob Foundation CEP Evaluation We are thrilled to share the latest progress update on the Jacob Foundation Community of Excellence Program (CEP) evaluation in Ghana! The CEP is a teacher and community-focused intervention to improve students’ socio-emotional development in Ghana. The evaluation of the program is being sponsored by UNICEF and the Jacob Foundation; and run by the Centre for Learning and Childhood Development (CLCD) in partnership with Ghana Education Service (GES). Our team has been hard at work in two selected districts, the Kwahu Afram Plains North District (KAPND) and Builsa North District, with the aim of implementing the program in other districts across the country. In Part 1 of this project, we have delved into the inception meetings, material development, fieldwork, training and data collection processes. These meetings, held between November and December 2022, were instrumental in defining the evaluation's scope, budget, and activities. We made significant modifications to our evaluation protocol, ensuring it aligns with our goals and resources. Our dedicated data collection management teams trained and gathered data from teachers in both districts, focusing on socio-emotional development—a critical aspect of our program. A total of 60 teachers and 15 supervisors underwent rigorous training, equipping them with the skills needed for effective data collection. Through focus group discussions and structured surveys, we collected valuable insights on 600 students, providing us with a comprehensive understanding of their needs and challenges. Looking ahead, Part 2 of our report outlines the remaining activities, including data analysis, and dissemination of results. We're committed to ensuring that our findings are accurate, insightful and actionable. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey toward creating positive change through education and empowerment. Together, we can build a brighter future for all! 😇 #CLCD #JacobFoundation #CommunityofExcellence #Education #Empowerment #Ghana #UNICEF #GES #ProgressUpdate #SocioEmotionalDevelopment
