Doing A PhD In Africa
Civic and Social Organizations
A community for networking, collaboration, knowledge, information-sharing and peer support among African PhD scholars.
About us
Doing A PhD in Africa (DAPIA) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental association incorporated as a company limited by guarantee in Ghana. It began in February 2017, led by Titilope Ajayi, a PhD student at the University of Ghana and a writer-researcher with a passion to raise the profile of higher education on the continent. Her initial motivation was to fill a gap in information and networking space targeted at doctoral scholars in Africa. This she did through a Facebook group that grew from a handful of members in 2017 to almost 600 by early 2019. As numbers grew and exchanges advanced, it became clear that DAPIA needed to position itself as a platform to more formally contribute to improving access to quality doctoral study in Africa as well as the associated conditions. The platform has thus positioned itself accordingly. Our passion is to: – Facilitate access to information relevant to PhD study in Africa. This includes opportunities for funding, fellowships, research projects related to Africa/requiring grounded Africa expertise, conferences, jobs (academic and non-academic) and topical debates related to key concepts and discourses in and concerning Africa. – Facilitate access to doctoral education through information and resourcing. – Provide space for networking, collaboration and peer support among African PhD scholars. Communauté savante dédié a faciliter les études doctorales à travers le continent.

As the world marks the annual 16 Days campaign against gender based violence, the critical research, storytelling and advocacy of Alliances for Africa and other heroic women's human rights defenders shows just how much more work needs to be done, especially in institutions of learning which are supposed to be safe spaces. We stand in solidarity with every woman and girl who has ever faced sexual harassment and endured sexual violence while trying to get an education and pledge to continue to do our part to make the world safer for women and girls everywhere. #16DaysofActivism #SafeLearning #GBVMustStop
We have so much to say. So much pain, so many untold stories about the prevalence of sexual harassment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. 63% of female students report being harassed in schools meant to nurture their future. E shock you? 🥴 In collaboration with the Committee of Gender Directors in Nigerian Universities, Alliances for Africa held a press briefing to speak to our findings on our Campus Climate Baseline Survey Report. Click to watch as our Executive Director, Iheoma Obibi and Gender Directors demand action. #NoExcuse #SexualHarassment #16DaysOfActivism #SystemChange
