Your Health, Our Concern

About us

Background The 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana (Chapter 14) provided for the establishment of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) as part of the Public Services of Ghana. In 1996, Parliament passed the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act 1996, Act 525, to pave way for the establishment of GHS. The GHS is therefore a Public Service body established under Act 525 of 1996 as required by the 1992 constitution. It is an autonomous Executive Agency responsible for implementation of national policies under the control of the Minister for Health through its governing Council – the Ghana Health Service Council. Rationale The establishment of the GHS was an essential part of the key strategies identified in the Health Sector Reform process in the 1990s, which was outlined in the Medium-Term Health Strategy and Five Year Programme of Work for the period 1997-2001. The strategies were necessary steps in establishing a more equitable, efficient, accessible, and responsive healthcare system. The reforms build on the reorganization of the MOH that began in 1993, which was explicitly designed to set the scene for the establishment of the GHS. The reforms also provided a sound organizational framework for the growing degree of managerial responsibility that had already been delegated to districts and hospitals. Themes that were central to the reorganization of 1993 remain important today for GHS: careful stewardship of scarce resources, clear lines of responsibility and control, decentralization, and accountability for performance rather than inputs. Our Mandate To provide and prudently manage comprehensive and accessible health service with special emphasis on primary health care at regional, district, and sub-district levels in accordance with approved national policies Our Vision All communities have access to timely, quality, and comprehensive healthcare Our Motto Your Health, Our Concern.

The Service and Zipline Ghana have reaffirmed their commitment to improving healthcare access nationwide with a significant expansion of their vaccine delivery program. Since 2019, Zipline has been delivering lifesaving medical supplies to hard-to-reach communities in Ghana using drones, supported by the GAVI vaccine alliance. Now with renewed backing from GAVI, Zipline will expand its operations to 68 districts facing significant access challenges from 2024 to 2026. This expanded partnership aims to address critical gaps in vaccination coverage in underserved regions by scaling up the delivery of essential vaccines, including new immunization programs. It will also contribute to ongoing research on the impact of drone delivery systems on public health while providing valuable insights into cost-effective healthcare distribution models.

The Service reaffirms its commitment to ensuring every child has access to safe and quality polio vaccines. As part of the November 2024 polio vaccination campaign, the Ashaiman Municipal Health Director, Ms. Patience Mammatah, provided a remarkable opportunity for Master George-Andre Yaw Owusu, a high school student and Health Prefect of Ghana Christian International High School, Dodowa, to actively support community mobilization efforts. Master George-Andre Yaw Owusu played a key role in educating parents and guardians on the importance of vaccination, helping to boost coverage in underserved areas. He also joined health professionals in identifying and vaccinating children under five in the Ashaiman Fitterline slums, ensuring they were protected against poliomyelitis. The GHS is proud to inspire the next generation to champion healthy communities through impactful interventions like this.

Over the weekend, Ghanaians united for an invigorating walk to #EndAIDSNow. The event started at Obra Spot, Nkrumah Circle, and ended at Osekan Park, Jamestown, drawing partners and political leaders who pledged their support in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Lady Nana Yaa Nsarko, Ghana’s National HIV Youth Ambassador and Miss Malaika 2023, passionately advocated for people living with HIV. She emphasized that while many are adhering to their medication, stigma and discrimination remain significant barriers. She urged collective action to eliminate the stigma associated with HIV&AIDS, reinforcing the need for a united front in this fight. #takingtherightpath #worldaidsday2024 #endthestigma
