📢 It is time for the first program opening of 2025! Applications for the flagship Data + Design for Development Program 2025 at the Leaders of Africa Institute are now open. Are you interested in analyzing and visualizing data to make data-driven decisions? The ability to visualize and communicate data effectively is more important than ever. As we navigate challenges such as public health crises, climate change, social inequality, and gaps in educational achievement, data plays a critical role in shaping decisions and driving action. Whether the goal is to inform policy, advocate for change, or foster understanding, compelling data visualizations and stories ensure that insights are not only seen but also understood and acted upon. The Data + Design for Development Program equips researchers, faculty, practitioners, advocates, and social innovators with the tools and techniques to transform data into dynamic and impactful visualizations for diverse audiences, including policymakers, community leaders, professional stakeholders, and the public. In the program, Data and Design Scholars become proficient in translating complex datasets into clear, accessible, and impactful visualizations and data stories using Tableau, Power BI, Datawrapper, Flourish, and R. The program is open to all fields and to all applicants based on the African continent AND internationally. We want to congratulate Gladys Konadu for being selected as an Emerging Research Scholar at Afrobarometer. 👏 Presently, Gladys is a Research Scholar in the Research Methods Program 2024 at the Leaders of Africa Institute. Gladys believes that "rigorous research can make a difference in Ghana, Africa, and the world." Gladys is pursuing her PhD at the University of Strathclyde with a focus on critical citizenship and women's political participation in Ghana and Africa broadly. The Emerging Scholars Workshop at Afrobarometer accelerates evidence-based research using Afrobarometer's impactful data resources. In her ongoing research, Gladys is examining the relationship between conceptions of democracy and expressions of political participation, including voting, protest, and advocacy. Gladys is leveraging nine rounds of the Afrobarometer survey, which is a valuable and reputable source of cross-national public attitudes on democracy, the economy, public service delivery, and society. We invite you to explore Afrobarometer and the publicly available datasets for yourself: https://lnkd.in/eWKmma5Q. It is a wonderful resource for international development data with an intuitive and accessible data analysis portal found here: https://lnkd.in/dtbz6cZ8. Thank you to our friends at Afrobarometer! Over the weekend, we welcomed our 2024 Research Communication Scholars for the official Program Opening and Orientation at the Leaders of Africa. 🎉 Our Scholars represent over 20 countries around the world and important research and development fields, including public health, communications, education, economics, evaluation, and international development. With our diversity, there is unity in the belief that researchers can and should shape public discourse and policy. As program co-lead Dr. Etta Aki shared during the session, storytelling is a powerful tool to engage audiences, inspire, and spur action. Next week, we will meet to develop our personal research portfolios and visibility, as well as learn how to build websites for policy initiatives. This is where technology meets engagement. We look forward to sharing more about the 2024 Research Communication Scholars in the weeks and months ahead, along with insights into their Capstone Projects.
