Denmark and South Africa share a longstanding partnership in renewable energy 💡🌬☀ Yesterday, we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and Zandile Majozi House Chairperson of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), along with Jan Oberholzer, Chairman of Mulilo, to discuss South Africa’s energy challenges and infrastructure opportunities 💡🗝 In 2023, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), the largest Danish investor in South Africa, made a significant investment in Mulilo Energy Holding, the largest South African renewable energy developer 💥🌱 This partnership exemplifies the potential of Danish expertise and investments in assisting with South Africa’s green transition and securing a sustainable energy future♻ We already now see the direct results of CIP´s investments creating green energy, growth and local impact in communities around South Africa. For over a decade, Denmark and South Africa have also collaborated through a Strategic Sector Cooperation program on energy, focusing on wind energy and integrating renewables into South Africa’s energy grid 🌬⚡ The meeting reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening our energy collaboration and partnership within South Africa’s energy landscape 🗺 🙏 Thank you to all partners involved!

  • We’re proud to be associated with the Ghana Water Institute’s Leak Detection Training Field with the deployment of Danish Water technologies from the following companies : GRUNDFOS pumps Leif Koch A/S, and AVK International valves. This partnership is key to reducing non-revenue water and improving water sustainability across Ghana.

Reducing Non-Revenue Water for a Sustainable Future We're excited to share that, as part of the Strategic Sector Cooperation on water, #AarhusVand and #GhanaWaterLimited have launched a groundbreaking Leak Detection Training Field at the #GhanaWaterInstitute. This initiative is a critical step towards reducing physical water loss in pipelines across Ghana. By minimizing water loss, we can enhance water services for those without reliable access. Reduced water loss also means lower energy consumption for Ghana Water, as most water travels over 50 kilometers to reach consumers. This collaboration will empower Ghana Water Company Limited staff by building their capacity to detect and address leaks in Ghana’s water network, ensuring greater efficiency and sustainability in water supply for all. Aarhus Vand, a global leader in managing non-revenue water, has achieved remarkable results in Denmark, where water loss is as low as 4.6%—a stark contrast to Ghana Water’s current rate of about 46 %. Aarhus Vand’s own leak detection training field in Denmark will serve as a “twin” to the one here in Ghana, enabling ongoing learning and improvement. This initiative marks a significant step in strengthening water infrastructure, advancing SDG 6, and supporting climate resilience in Ghana. 🌱💧 #Cityofaarhus

  • Africa in Focus at the Water Export Day The Regional Industry Team for Water and Environment took part in Water Export Day at Grundfos in Bjerringbro (Denmark), with a special focus on Africa. The team showcased key opportunities within Africa’s water sector, emphasizing the need to accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Promising areas identified included water supply, irrigation, and wastewater management. African governments, alongside partners, have committed substantial investments to drive these efforts. Also, in line with Denmark’s Africa Strategy, over DKK2billion has been earmarked for water programmes. In a panel discussion with Danish companies - TEMcompany, GRUNDFOS, Alumichem, and Export and Investment Fund of Denmark—there was a strong consensus on the importance of Danish companies, especially SMEs, forming strategic partnerships across the continent. The discussions also highlighted the importance of patience, adaptability, and trust-building. Financing is indeed a challenge, but leveraging partnerships and risk-sharing models can bridge these gaps, allowing Danish companies to make meaningful impacts while building sustainable business models. Furthermore, leveraging Trade Council “boots on the ground” were highlighted as essential steps for success. The Trade Council has a range of instruments to support Danish companies entering these markets. As we continue these dialogues, we are excited to see how Danish innovation continue contribute to addressing Africa’s water challenges and to a more resilient future. How is the South African economy doing after the new Government of National Unity (GNU) following the May election? And what does it mean for Danish trade? 📊 🌍   Following the May 2024 election results, the financial markets have responded positively to the formation of South Africa’s new government, reflected in lower risk premiums. This is a promising development for the South African economy, fostering increased investments and job creation.   Since the election, the South Africa’s Government credit default swap (CDS), a financial instrument indicating the cost of insuring against government debt default and an useful gauge of the perceived risk-premium, has dropped from around 280 basis points to 178 basis points. This marks its lowest level since the onset of the COVID-crisis, signalling renewed market confidence.   This is encouraging news for current investments and offers a positive outlook for Danish companies already operating in, or considering entry into, the South African market 💡   According to data from Oxford Economics, South Africa’s economic outlook is improving, offering a more stable environment for investment. The report provides key insights on GDP growth, public finances, trade balance, and domestic demand.   💥 If you need just one key takeaway, it is this:   "We are cautiously optimistic that demand will improve gradually throughout H2 2024, which should translate into more robust economic activity. The revised forecast for GDP growth in 2024 is now 1.0% (previously 0.8%), with an average growth of 1.7% per year over the next five years. However, we still need evidence of sustained improvement in governance and operational efficiency before revising long-term growth expectations upward."   🗯 In 2022, 106 Danish subsidiaries in South Africa employed 15,773 people across the country.   💡 For further assistance or information on the South African market, feel free to reach out to the Danish Embassy. We are here to help.

How can we reduce inequality in South Africa while promoting growth, creating jobs, and attracting foreign investment? 🇿🇦📊 For the past 30 years, South Africa has worked to tackle inequality through its Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) regulations. These policies aim to ensure greater economic inclusion for historically disadvantaged groups. Implementing B-BBEE can although be challenging for foreign companies, looking to invest in South Africa 🌱 As part of our Ambassador’s Executive Discussions (AED) series, we had the privilege of hosting a high-level dialogue with Mr. Tshediso Matona, Commissioner of the BEE Commission, Mr. Jacob Maphutha, B-BBEE Chief Director at DTIC, and Ms. Rachel Malatji Executive Manager of the Compliance Division at the B-BBEE Commission. 🎪The event brought together top-tier Danish companies, offering them a unique platform to discuss opportunities and challenges related to B-BBEE and their investments in South Africa. 🎙️The AED initiative aims to foster dialogue and collaboration between Danish businesses and key South African stakeholders, ensuring that we continue to build a valuable partnership between our countries. The discussions provided invaluable insights into how Danish investors can align with South Africa’s empowerment goals while contributing to its economic growth. 💡We look forward to continuing these productive conversations.
