Combatting Climate Change. Improving Livelihoods.

About us

WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Use) seeks to become one of Africa’s leading science-based institution in the provision of climate services in and for West Africa. It provides information and knowledge at the local, national, and regional levels to its West African member countries to cope with the adverse impacts of climate change and devise integrated mid and long-term options to build up resilient and productive socio-ecological landscapes. WASCAL does this through (i) Training and Capacity Building to foster the emergence of new generation of scientists and experts in the fields of climate, biophysical and social sciences and (ii) by establishing a regional hub which aims at generating science-based climate and environmental services in WASCAL member countries(Togo,Benin, Ghana, Burkina-Faso, Cabo Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, the Gambia, Niger, Nigeria and Germany).

  • To unlock Burkina Faso's bioenergy potential, WASCAL convened a validation workshop under the BMBF-funded BIO2H-Burkina Project. Experts from government, research, and industry reviewed a comprehensive report, discussing biodigesters and hydrogen production. Their feedback will refine research aimed at assessing bioenergy resources and the feasibility of multi-scale green hydrogen. #SustainableEnergy #BIO2HBurkina

The 5th cohort of our #climatechange scholars is making tremendous progress, with 132 talented students from 12 universities across 11 West African countries working tirelessly to achieve their academic goals. Recently, our scholars at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi pursuing PhD in Climate Change and Land use successfully defended their theses, marking an amazing feat in their academic trajectory. We're proud to see our students on track to complete their defenses before the scholarship period ends in March. Congratulations to all our scholars who have so far defended their theses succefully. To all who are yet to defend theirs, we wish you all the best. #wascalscholarship

  • The recent science-policy dialogue held in Ouagadougou, in collaboration with GERICS, successfully bridged the gap between #climatechange and decision-making in West Africa. Through focused discussions, researchers and policymakers explored how to manage uncertainties in climate data and effectively integrate open-access data into decision-making processes. Key outcomes included agreements on improving the use of climate models in policy development, enhancing data sharing practices, and addressing critical data gaps. The event reinforced the commitment of all stakeholders to incorporate climate information into national and local strategies, fostering stronger climate governance and sustainable development. A clear action plan was implemented to ensure that climate services continue to drive resilient, informed decision-making, ultimately contributing to the region’s long-term socio-economic stability. The dialogue, which attracted African key players within the science space, was funded by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung
