Huge congratulations to our incredible incredible organizing team at Imperial College London: Islem, Alice and Zhenzhu! They’ve been awarded £10,000 to contribute to making the "Harnessing the Potential of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development" conference a reality. 🌍💡 With this grant, in collaboration with AIMS Cameroon and AIMS Research and Innovation Centre, we brought together brilliant minds to explore how AI and Data Science can accelerate sustainable development in the Global South. Focusing on agriculture, health, and energy, this event was a big step towards achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 🌱 We couldn’t be more excited about the impact we had! #DSAIConference2024 #SustainableDevelopment #AIforGood #SDGs #GlobalInnovation

Researchers from Imperial College London, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and the University of Ghana joined forces to tackle the challenges of rapid urbanisation 🤝 The AIMS-Imperial Global Fellows Programme brought together 40 doctoral researchers for a week-long initiative in Accra, dedicated to advancing urban innovation for healthier, more sustainable cities. This immersive five-day professional development course fosters teamwork, self-reflection, and the foundation for future research collaborations. By uniting PhD students, researchers, and academic experts, the programme inspires innovative strategies to transform urban spaces into thriving, sustainable environments. This year's event was the second edition of the programme, building on the success of the inaugural event held in Rwandain 2022. The next AIMS-Imperial Global Fellows Programme is set to take place at Imperial in London in July 2025, promising another opportunity to drive impactful collaboration and innovation. Ophelia Mensah Hayford is a distinguished Ghanaian legislator, serving as the Member of Parliament for the Mfantseman Constituency and the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation. 🇬🇭 An alumna of the University of Ghana, Minister Ophelia served in the Ghana Police Service, where her dedication and expertise earned her a role as a United Nations Police Advisor with the United Nations and African Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Sudan. She also contributed significantly to the INTERPOL Unit within the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Accra, where she led complex investigations, international requests from member countries, and extradition cases. Minister Ophelia is a firm advocate for innovation and progress, expressing her vision for the new hub as having the potential to “position Ghana as a leading technology and innovation cluster in the Sub-Saharan region." Natalie Paida Jabangwe, MBA DIC, Executive Secretary of timbuktoo Africa and Group Digital Executive Officer at Sanlam, was a keynote speaker at our hub launch event last month. She is also the former Chief Executive Officer of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, the second largest mobile financial service in Africa, and an Imperial College London alumna, having studied an EMBA specialising in hi-tech strategy and corporate turnaround. The timbuktoo initiative is promoted by the UNDP; a fund with a billion-dollar target to support innovators within the African startup ecosystem. By working to support this initiative, alongside other African funds and partners, Imperial Global Ghana will support the rapid commercialisation of scientific breakthroughs made in Africa, so they reach those who will benefit. 🤝

CLARITY (the Climate Change Resilient Equitable Healthy Cities in Africa) is a major new research project being led by Imperial College London, in partnership with University of Ghana, African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), University of Cape Town, African Mayoral Leadership Initiative and the African Urban Research Initiative. 🤝 Generously funded by the Wellcome Trust, the project aims to significantly enhance resilience to the health impacts of climate change in Ghana and Rwanda, and to empower communities with critical insights and tools to adapt to a changing climate. The Academic Director of Imperial Global Ghana – the university’s first African hub - Professor Majid Ezzati is leading the project. Commenting on the new initiative he said: “Cities in Africa will be among some of those most impacted by the challenges and consequences of climate change. This project will help create a blueprint of action to create more resilient cities and society. Our work in Ghana and Rwanda will not only benefit cities in those countries but have applications for the wider continent and world." 🌍 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/exesgYXc

Maazu Bayuoni is a Chevening Awards scholar at Imperial College Business School and the Founder and President of the Coalition for Positive Impact, a youth-led organisation focused on nurturing and developing young Africans into transformative business leaders through innovation, mentorship and technology. The esteemed Chevening scheme is backed by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and receives over 60,000 applications a year. Before joining Imperial, Maazu studied Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Ghana, which this year established a significant research and education partnership with Imperial. Amoako, Founder and President Emeritus of the African Center for Economic Transformation (ACET) and Convenor of The Ghana Compact, has dedicated his career to solving development challenges across the world. He is a highly respected global thought leader, renowned for shaping policies and driving initiatives that promote good governance, economic growth and transformative development across Africa. K.Y. began his career at The World Bank, becoming the Bank’s Director for Education and Social Policy. He went on to serve as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, during which he transformed the institution to more effectively serve African policy-makers, to amplify the African voice internationally and to influence African partners.
