Today marks the launch of our #ProjectNexus 2025 calendar! We kicked off with a training session for Moneycorp Bank, featuring case studies and an interactive workshop on red flags and report writing to generate actionable intelligence. Both in-person and virtual participants showed great enthusiasm as they explored techniques for detecting and identifying #moneylaundering, #terroristfinancing, and other criminal activities through suspicious transactions and activities. Thanks to Justine Gilder and Seamus Hayes for hosting us.

This week private and public sector professionals working in #AML #CFT attended a Sanctions Risk Seminar at the University of Gibraltar, delivered by Kharon, a data and technology firm that helps leading organisations identify a wide range of sanctions and compliance risks. Organised by the Gibraltar Financial Intelligence Unit and funded by the U.S. Department of State – Bureau of International Security and Non-Proliferation, the event provided valuable insights into #sanctions #compliance and proliferation investigations. The one-day event which was structured as a workshop, also highlighted the use of open-source intelligence (#OSINT) techniques to uncover sanctions evasion tactics and support investigations. Attendees explored case studies to better understand the complexities of sanctions legislation and frameworks, with a particular focus on #UK, #EU, and #US regulatory regimes. These case studies illustrated how OSINT tools can enhance due diligence, detect hidden connections, and identify enforcement opportunities in a rapidly evolving environment. Opening the event, the Minister for Justice, Nigel Feetham KC MP, stated: “Sanctions compliance is at the forefront of Gibraltar’s commitment to upholding international standards in combating financial crime. Events like this ensure that our professionals remain equipped with the knowledge and understand the tools and technologies available to navigate sanctions effectively. My Ministry is very grateful for the opportunity provided by Kharon specialists, the US State Department, and the #GFIU’s proactive approach in ensuring that Gibraltar’s finance centre is kept abreast of the latest sanctions developments.” Thanks to Freya Page and Alberto B. for a very engaging session!

I visited the GFIU today to thank the staff and senior team for their work and dedication as we approach the end of the year. I regularly meet with the Director of the GFIU, Edgar Lopez, and have greatly appreciated his professionalism and commitment since I took office over a year ago, especially given the challenges posed by work pressures. With the recent addition of five new recruits to the team, I felt it was important to visit personally to introduce myself and express my gratitude for their contributions to the vital work carried out by the GFIU. This week at the Europol HQ, the Gibraltar Financial Intelligence Unit attended the #EFIPPP 25th Plenary Meeting themed ‘Professional Enablers’, which brought together experts to discuss emerging threats and innovative solutions in the fight against financial crime. During the Money Mule Work Stream, we were able to showcase our two-pronged approach to raising awareness on money mule schemes, under #ProjectNexus outreach program, focusing on: 🧑🎓 Potential Victims – Educating vulnerable groups, such as university students (in collaboration with the Department of Education), about the risks and consequences of becoming unwitting participants in money laundering. 👤 AML Professionals – Providing industry professionals with the tools and insights to detect and disrupt these schemes effectively through our e-learning platform (e-Nexus). Initiatives like these are essential in combating money laundering and protecting both individuals and financial systems. Grateful for the opportunity to share our efforts and learn from insightful presentations in this space! #AML #CFT #EFIPPP #PublicPrivatePartnership #ProjectNexus #Awareness #Collaboration
