After 14 years leading the charge, Stephen Hare is stepping into a Group-wide role as Director of Risk and Compliance. A familiar face to many, Stephen has been part of Sovereign for over 20 years, starting in Gibraltar before setting up the Guernsey office in 2010. He’ll continue to be based on the island while taking on this broader remit. Stepping into the MD role at Sovereign Trust (Channel Islands) Limited is Martin-Dale Bradley. Martin joined Sovereign in 2019 as in-house legal, bringing experience in corporate law, estate planning, and tax structuring from his time as a practising attorney in South Africa. Since 2022, he’s also been on the board of Sovereign Pension Services (CI) Limited. A well-earned step up for both—and exciting times ahead for Sovereign Guernsey. South Africa’s updated tax treaty with Kuwait, effective 2 October 2024, ends the 0% dividends tax for Kuwaiti, Dutch, and Swedish qualifying shareholders, introducing a 5%-10% rate. Controversially, the protocol is also retrospective in its application. It stipulates that its provisions will have effect from 1 April 2012, the date on which dividends’ tax came into effect in South Africa. Three years ago, Leanne Beresford (our Head of Personal Pensions in Gibraltar) took her first steps on a treadmill with a Couch to 5K challenge. Fast forward to January 2025, and Leanne found herself crossing the finish line of the Seville Half Marathon—all in support of PossAbilities Gibraltar, Sovereign’s chosen charity for the year and and a cause close to her heart, as they have played a vital role in supporting her son, Luke. What started as a personal goal became something much bigger, with an incredible £1,685 raised—far surpassing her original £500 target. With her son Luke by her side, Leanne handed over the donation, knowing every step (and every sore muscle!) had been worth it. Leanne commented: "I finished the half marathon in 2hr 34mins, despite the weather which was a very drizzly day. It was the hardest thing I have done both physically and mentally, but the emotion I felt when I crossed that finish line was one I will always remember...I cried!"
