Launch Failure of the First H3 Launch Vehicle and Setting up a Special Task Force

March 7, 2023 (JST)

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched the first H3 Launch Vehicle (H3 TF1) carrying the Advanced Land Observing Satellite "DAICHI-3" (ALOS-3) at 10:37:55 on March 7, 2023 (JST) from the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center. However, the second stage engine failed to ignite and we determined that it would be unable to enter the Earth’s orbit as planned. Then, at 10:51:50, we sent a command destruct signal, effecting a failed launch.

We would like to express our deepest apology to many people and entities, particularly those related to the satellite, local organizations and the public, who had high expectations for this project.

We have set up a special task force headed by President YAMAKAWA, and started investigations to find out the cause.
We will keep updated the information, including findings from the investigations.
