Global Energy Monitor

GEM’s work is primarily organized into “Trackers,” each of which offers information about a specific aspect of the global energy system. Each tracker consists of a core data set, along with a variety of tools to visualize and understand this data.

Tabs on each tracker page:

  • The Download Data page allows you to receive a copy of the spreadsheet with all data points via email and explains the license and citation guidelines that apply for using the data set.
  • The Wiki link will take you to a separate wiki website that includes searchable entries for each item in the data set, including references and further background.
  • Summary Tables allow you to understand the bigger picture through a variety of summary statistics.
  • See the Tracker Map to visualize the location and capacity of assets from the data set. Some trackers have a “Dashboard” tab on the map page to view additional data visualizations. You can return to the main tracker pages by clicking the “About” button in the upper-right corner of the Map page.
  • If you want to understand in-depth details about how we produce this data set or have other questions, look under Methodology and FAQs.
  • We also produce Reports & Briefings that provide a more in-depth look into what our latest data sets are revealing about the industry, and we highlight News stories that feature our data. Trackers with a high volume of the above items may have subpages with those items featured, or you can see all items here

While most of our trackers are organized by type (such as a particular type of power generation), some combine multiple data types for a particular geographic region. A few of GEM’s trackers have different formats and/or their own website, such as the Private Equity Tracker; many of these trackers were developed in collaboration with other partners.
See the full list of our trackers here.
