Dem derive de name Tanganyika from de Swahili words tanga "sail" den nyika "uninhabited plain, wilderness", wey dey create de phrase "sail in the wilderness". Dem sam times dey understand am as a reference to Lake Tanganyika.[2]
De name of Zanzibar dey derive from Zanj, de name of a local people (said to mean "black"), den Arabic barr "coast" anaa "shore."[3]
