Legal assistance for refugees and asylum seekers in Greece.
Σχετικά με εμάς
Mobile Info Team (MIT) seeks to empower the people caught in and around an inefficient, ineffective, and unjust asylum system. Through making the complexities of seeking asylum more understandable, we aim to improve the lives of refugees and to promote rights and dignity in refuge. Our information is designed to give asylum seekers a decent grasp of what they have to do next, whatever their situation, and in doing so, help them reclaim a measure of control and self-determination. Communication with asylum seeker communities is what sets MIT apart. We give information through personal visits, telephone, WhatsApp, and social media, in both one-on-one assistance and general updates. This engagement has helped to dispel rumors, avoid confusion, increase the understanding of asylum procedures, and has resulted in successful asylum and family reunification applications and won the organization trust in key communities. As we move forward, MIT aims to impact asylum systems in research, viable solutions to key issues, and engagement in advocacy for reform and improvement. Everyone has a right to life, security, and dignity, and asylum seekers must have access to fair, just, and empowering refuge. This is the only acceptable response to persecution.

Today, with Border Violence Monitoring Network and Border Criminologies, Mobile Info Team presented evidence to the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) regarding the dire conditions in Greece’s Pre-Removal Detention Centres. We call on the Committee to give special attention to the human rights situation in Greece’s pre-removal facilities and take appropriate action in order to increase pressure on Greece to end these violations. 🌍 SUPPORT DISPLACED PEOPLE’S RIGHTS https://lnkd.in/dT37QUwg ⚠️ THEIR RIGHTS ARE IN PERIL …but which one(s)? Displaced people seeking safety or livelihood have the right to seek protection in Europe. This includes the right to asylum and its corollaries, the principle of non-refoulement, the rights to life, safety, dignity, and other procedural guarantees. These rights ensure that people seeking protection are treated with respect and dignity and that their asylum claims are properly processed. ⚖️ In principle, EU Member States are bound to uphold these rights. ⚠️ In reality, this is far from the case. 🌍 2. RIGHT TO SEEK ASYLUM International law, including the 1951 Refugee Convention and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, guarantees the right to seek asylum and protection from return to a place where one may face harm. In Greece, the right to seek asylum is often violated: obstacles to physically requesting protection, the malfunctioning of online platforms or the lack of interpretation, are all strategies used by the authorities to prevent people from seeking asylum. 🛑 3. NON-REFOULEMENT People seeking asylum should not be sent back to places where they could be in danger. This is the principle of non-refoulement, prohibiting states from illegally returning people to places where their safety or freedom is not guaranteed. Pushback of asylum seekers is the other political weapon used to prevent displaced people from seeking asylum, resulting in the deaths or endangerment of thousands of people, in flagrant violation of international law. 🔓 4. RIGHT TO FREEDOM Everyone has the right to liberty and security. Nobody should be detained or imprisoned without a valid reason, including displaced people seeking protection in Europe. But in Greece, asylum seekers are systematically placed in closed camps or refugee camps, where people are trapped in detention-like conditions while their asylum application is being processed. They suffer from a wide range of rights violations, and face health and safety risks. 🤝 5. RIGHT TO HUMAN DIGNITY The right to dignity is central to human rights: all individuals, regardless of their status, deserve to live in a manner that upholds their self-respect. In Greece, many displaced people face degrading living conditions in camps, which compromises their dignity, health, and well-being. They lack access to basic necessities and services resulting in violations of people's dignity and right to a safe environment. ⚖️ 6. PROCEDURAL RIGHTS Procedural rights are protections that ensure individuals are treated fairly during legal processes: access to a lawyer, understanding the charges against them, the right to interpretation, the right to call and examine witnesses and a fair hearing, etc. Each of our organizations have routinely noted gross violations of the procedural rights of displaced people in most of the cases that we have undertaken. 💙 Be part of our 15,000€ fundraising drive for justice!

🚨 SUPPORTING THE RIGHTS OF DISPLACED PEOPLE https://lnkd.in/dpTRXThy WHAT ARE WE (REALLY) TALKING ABOUT? 📊 57,364 people arrived in Greece in 2024 in search of protection. ⚠️ Displaced people seeking refuge in Greece face many obstacles in their search for safety. They face inhumane living conditions and are forced to navigate a legal system that consistently fails and re-victimises them, on top of a host of other systemic problems. 🚪 DE FACTO DETENTION in prison-like structures Currently, more than 13,000 people are forced to live in overcrowded, prison-like structures called Closed Controlled Access Centres (CCAC) and Reception and Identification Centres (RIC), often located in remote areas with little or no access to the outside world. In Samos, more than 4,300 people live in a space designed for 3,600. 🏚️ INHUMANE LIVING CONDITIONS The conditions of refugee camps in Greece have been the subject of criticism for many years, with concerns raised about unsanitary and substandard living conditions. For example, access to drinking water and food is below the required standard. Since May 2024, asylum seekers have also been deprived of their meagre but essential monthly allowance, which they rely on to meet their basic needs. ⚖️ LACK OF LEGAL AID Access to legal assistance and remedies has long been a challenge for people seeking asylum in Greece. With complex, lengthy and unfair asylum procedures, a structural lack of legal aid and, more recently, a lack of interpretation services, it has become increasingly difficult for people to apply for asylum and to have their application properly assessed. The overall protection rate in Greece averages 47% in 2024. 🔗 CRIMINALISATION In recent years, the authorities have abused the detention of displaced people. More than 2,000 displaced people are currently detained in Greece on suspicion of 'smuggling', and almost 90% of them are third-country nationals. Trials last an average of 37 minutes, and the average prison sentence is 46 years. 🤝 Be part of our 15,000€ fundraising drive for justice! With no access to cash assistance, interpretation or state-funded legal aid, the situation is more dire than ever. Support us here: https://lnkd.in/dpTRXThy
