Green roofs provide significant benefits for office buildings, particularly in terms of thermal behavior and energy efficiency. 🌿 👇 A study conducted on an intensive green roof system covering a 10,000 m² office building in Athens, Greece, illustrates these advantages comprehensively. The green roof, featuring 16,000 Mediterranean plants with low irrigation needs and a running track of stabilized ceramic floor, demonstrated a remarkable ability to regulate surface temperatures. 🌡️ Measurements during the summer period revealed that the surface temperature of the green roof was up to 15 °C lower than that of a conventional roof. This substantial cooling effect helps maintain a more comfortable indoor climate. ❄️ The green roof's impact on indoor temperatures is also noteworthy, with the average indoor temperature of the non-air-conditioned building decreasing by up to 0.7 °C. This temperature reduction translates into significant energy savings, as the building's annual cooling and heating needs are considerably lowered. 💰 Beyond energy efficiency, green roofs also contribute to mitigating urban heat island effects. By reducing surface temperatures and providing solar protection and cooling through evapotranspiration, green roofs help lower the ambient temperature and reduce the sensible heat released to the atmosphere. This dual benefit of cooling the building and its surroundings underscores the environmental value of green roofs in urban settings. 🌆 In summary, the study highlights the substantial impact of green roofs on improving thermal behavior and energy efficiency in office buildings. By lowering surface and indoor temperatures, green roofs not only enhance indoor comfort but also contribute to significant energy savings and urban heat island mitigation. 🏢 Green up the roofs, the cities, the world! 🌍💚 _______ Photo/project information: Supply & technical support provided by Prasini Stegi Green Roof Systems 📍Athens, Greece ✍️ SPARCH Sakellaridou/Papanikolaou Architects 📸 © Nikos Daniilidis
