The LNG pathway is only ‘two minutes into the hour’ of our journey to net zero. While approximately 2,200 LNG-fuelled vessels and LNG carriers represent only ‘two minutes into the hour’ of the global fleet of approximately 60,000 deep sea vessels, it remains an adolescent fuel that is maturing significantly faster than other alternatives. And amidst the alternative fuels landscape, there are aspects of LNG usage that are fully mature. The other alternative fuels are basically toddlers by comparison. And when it comes to safety, some are mere newborns. On one critical element LNG is well ahead - safety for one. LNG is easy to transport, poses minimal, if any, risk to marine environments, has a low flammability range and is non-toxic. Effective regulations, standards and guidelines for safe operations are widespread, and LNG has been shipped around the world for almost 60 years without any major incidents at sea or in ports. However, the LNG pathway still needs more investment, especially in landside facilities for liquefaction near ports, bio and synthetic methane production and bunkering capacity worldwide. “LNG is a relevant transition fuel for marine decarbonisation, and it will be around for quite a while” according to SEA-LNG member MAN Energy Solutions' head of business development & digitalisation, four-stroke marine & license, Johannes Lauterbach. And, we couldn’t agree more! In a wide-ranging piece from Riviera Maritime Media Ltd, SEA-LNG members MAN ES and Wärtsilä shared that they're making strides to tackle methane slip: ✅ MAN ES has highlighted how advances in engine design that use the Otto cycle have drastically cut methane slip, from 6% in 2015 to about 1.5% of fuel in 2024 –and how they aim to get slippage values down notably below 1% of the fuel used. ✅ While operating on LNG, Wärtsilä ‘s all-new NextDF feature reduces methane emissions to less than 2% of fuel use across all load points, achieving as low as 1.1% in a wide load range. Methane slip is a recognised challenge that the shipping industry is well on its way to solving. Efforts from our members, such as MAN ES and Wärtsilä, show that the technology to virtually eliminate methane slip from ship engines is mature and being piloted on vessels today. How has the world's shipping fleet evolved since 1980? In 2023, the global fleet grew by 3.4%, surpassing trade growth but still below historical averages. Total cargo capacity reached 2.4 billion tons. Growth was driven primarily by container ships and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, though bulk carriers and oil tankers continue to hold the largest share. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) calls for stronger regulatory frameworks to incentivize fleet renewal and adoption of greener technologies. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲: 📌 The LES accurately captures the shock-boundary layer interactions and closely matches experimental results 📌 A study on the spanwise domain size shows that the shock oscillation amplitude decreases with increasing span, although its frequency and mean location remains fixed through the simulations. 📌 A comparison of high- and low-resolution LES results shows that deviations from under-resolution are mostly limited to the separated region past the shock, where the high-fidelity results match experimental results more closely. 📌 URANS is shown to capture the shock unsteadiness correctly, but at a reduced amplitude and fails to match the force distributions on the blade surface. “The global transition toward low-carbon and decarbonisation strategies has significantly increased the number of LNG-powered ships, driving demand for LNG bunkering vessels”, argues NAVER Corp in a piece that explores the growing LNG bunkering market in China and South Korea. To meet demand, both China and South Korea are expanding their LNG bunkering deliveries with newbuilds hitting the water today. However, the LNG bunkering network will need to grow to meet the skyrocketing LNG newbuild orders. The article references our data, highlighting that 590 LNG-powered vessels are operating globally as of last month, accounting for approximately 2% of the total fleet. Today, there are 60 LNG bunkering vessels currently in operation with a further 13 on order and significant interest amongst the maritime community to continue investing in these important assets. "Decarbonisation is both a target that we must achieve and one we can realise in the coming decades" Our COO Steve Esau shared his thoughts in the latest edition of Baltic Transport Journal! In a broad-ranging article, Steve put pen to paper to share his thoughts on a host of topics regarding the LNG pathway for shipping: Methane slip is a recognised challenge the industry is well on the way to solving. The technology to virtually eliminate methane slip from ship engines is very promising and is being piloted on vessels today. High-pressure dual-fuel engine technologies already exist with virtually no methane slip, and for low-pressure engines where it remains an issue, continuing innovations by engine manufacturers have resulted in levels of methane slip falling more than four-fold over the past 25 years. LNG as a marine fuel offers a low-risk, incremental pathway via biomethane and e-methane to becoming a net-zero GHG emissions fuel for 2050 and beyond. It utilises existing LNG bunkering infrastructure and proven safe shipboard technology.
