A recent poll conducted by NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist reveals that Americans are almost unanimously against criminalizing abortion and strongly disapprove of political violence. However, the majority also feel that the country is excessively politically correct and are divided on the issue of deporting illegal immigrants.

The poll, which surveyed 1,305 respondents, found that the majority acknowledge President Biden’s victory in the 2020 election, despite 60% of Republicans falsely claiming otherwise. Many respondents also expressed the need for a leader willing to break some rules to get the country back on track, with 30% of Republicans suggesting that violence may be necessary to rectify the situation.

Biden and Trump in Statistical Tie for 2024

Former President Trump’s rhetoric and praise for authoritarian leaders have been noted, along with his focus on immigration and white grievance. In contrast, President Biden’s re-election campaign centers on democracy, abortion rights, and social equality. The poll shows Biden and Trump in a statistical tie for a potential 2024 rematch, with Biden slightly ahead.

The poll also revealed that the majority of respondents believe women who have abortions should not face penalties, violence should not be used to get the country back on track, a president should not be immune from crimes committed while in office, and religion should not influence government policy. However, a slim majority also believe America is too politically correct and all illegal immigrants should be deported.

Despite the divisions, the survey found some positive points: 81% of respondents have friends with differing political views, and 68% believe the American Dream is still attainable.

Below is a breakdown of the poll:
