About us
About APRU As a network of leading universities linking the Americas, Asia and Australasia, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) is the Voice of Knowledge and Innovation for the Asia-Pacific region. We bring together thought leaders, researchers, and policy-makers to exchange ideas and collaborate on effective solutions to the challenges of the 21st century. We leverage collective education and research capabilities of our members into the international public policy process. Our primary research areas include natural hazards & disaster risk reduction, women in leadership, population aging, global health, sustainable cities, artificial intelligence & the future of work, the Pacific Ocean, and labor mobility. History APRU was established in Los Angeles in 1997 by the presidents of UCLA, Berkeley, Caltech and the University of Southern California (USC). It now has a membership of the presidents of 60 leading research research universities from around the Pacific Rim. This includes 200,000 academic staff and 2 million students. Seeing the rapid economic integration of the region and the formation of APEC, the founding presidents’ vision was to establish a premier alliance of research universities as an advisory body to international organisations, governments and business on the development of science and innovation as well as on the broader development of higher education. The vision now encompasses focusing new knowledge on the global challenges affecting the region. Just returned from two incredibly productive days in #Singapore where I was invited to join a very engaging panel session with Emir Hrnjić, Sagun Garg and Danil Mikhailov at the launch event for the #AsiaPacific #CapacityAcceleratorNetwork set up by DataDotOrg, APRU and the Asian Institute of Digital Finance at the National University of Singapore with generous support from Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. The event provided me with the perfect opportunity to meet many like-minded and very inspiring colleagues passionate about making a difference through their work at DataDotOrg as well as Nanyang Technological University Singapore, National University of Singapore and Google, It was especially wonderful to finally meet Priyank Hirani in person after we first collaborated virtually in 2020 on the APRU #AIforSocialGood Project. I am very much looking forward to jointly collaborating and accelerating skills development in #AI and #Data for social impact in the #AsiaPacific also with...
