As we head towards the end of 2024, we at AIGCC are proud to reflect on a year packed with impactful work. We actively participated in public consultations across four markets, representing the voices of investors on sustainability and climate disclosure standards, energy plans, policy addresses, and stock exchange guidelines. I already posted about this report. Kudos to RMI for such a well-researched and satisfying read! So many interesting and insightful sections for Responsible Investment (RI) practitioners. "It is the combination of #market #forces (who drive interest rates) and #regulations that orients firms’ investment decisions towards the #low-#carbon #transition." "Using asset-level data from the S&P Global World Electric Power Plant database, Wilson et al. (2023) tracked firm level #low-#carbon (green) investments and #high-#carbon (brown) investments for publicly listed electric utilities firms from 2012-2021. They find that a reduction in the firm-level #cost of #debt #directly increases both firm-level green and brown investments (through the discount rate), and also #indirectly increases investment by enabling #debt #capital #raising. Therefore, an indiscriminate increase in cost of debt for brown issuers would not mechanically increase their ratio of green-to-brown investments." https://lnkd.in/gWdCf4eP Investor Group on Climate Change (IGCC) Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC) Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) Responsible Investor S&P Global Commodity Insights S&P Global Sustainable1 UTS Finance Department UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures University of Melbourne

👏Congratulations to Institute fellows Manish Shakdwipee, PhD and Elchin Mammadov and our colleague Guido G. on publication in the Journal of Impact and ESG Investing of their analysis of a managed phaseout of coal-fired power in the APAC region. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dRu2RcbM The analysis details how an orderly phaseout of coal-fired power plants in APAC could slash nearly three-quarters of the region’s combined coal power generation-related carbon emissions and minimize economic disruption from the energy transition. Its publication in the journal arrives a week after #COP29, where 25 countries and the European Union announced their intention to put forward national climate plans that reflect no new unabated coal in their energy systems. The announcement was joined by the Asia Investor Group on Climate Change (AIGCC), which called for the early winding down of coal plants as part of overall efforts by countries in APAC to reduce their emissions. The paper, which brings forward an analysis developed by the Institute at the request of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) Asia-Pacific Network, draws on examples from Drax Group PLC (UK), Vattenfall AB (Sweden), RWE AG (Germany), Uniper SE (Germany), and Engie SA (France) to illustrate varied outcomes of coal phaseouts.

One of the clear signals from COP29 is that there is an urgent need to mobilise large pools of capital more easily and quickly to meet the needs of a just and fair climate transition. We have worked with and supported the investor-led ASCOR project since its inception in 2021. This week, ASCOR published a landmark assessment of 70 countries’ climate policies and ambitions. These countries represent 85% of global greenhouse gas emissions, 90% of global GDP and 100% of three main sovereign bond market indices. This means that investors can now systematically integrate integrate climate considerations into their decision-making on sovereign bond investments. The results from the assessment are sobering: no country has a 2030 NDC target ambitious enough to align with their 1.5°C benchmark and only 16% of countries have a transparent and credible commitment to phase out fossil fuel subsidies. More encouragingly, 80% of the assessed countries have a net zero target, with some targeting net zero before 2050, and over half have established a legal framework for national climate policy. Given the focus on COP29 on finance, it is also striking that only one third of developing countries have been transparent about the costs of essential climate mitigation and adaptation, data that are essential to quantify and prioritise the scale of public and private finance needed to effectively respond to climate change. Congratulations to all those involved including the report authors (Antonina Scheer, Camila Cristancho, Simon Dietz, Setenay Hızlıok, Johannes Honneth, Sylvan Lutz, Giorgia Monsignori, Carmen Nuzzo and Rory Sullivan), and the ASCOR Co-chairs (Adam Matthews, Victoria Barron, Esther Law, Claudia Gollmeier). The new #ASCOR report “State of Transition in Sovereigns 2024: Tracking national climate action for investors” is now out: https://lnkd.in/ehdM6EZe Topline highlights we noted in our press release (https://lnkd.in/e_Wk6_4M) are: 🔸Only one third of developing countries have been transparent about the costs of essential climate mitigation and adaptation, which may constrain public and private finance. 🔸No country has a 2030 NDC target ambitious enough to align with their 1.5°C benchmark, but two countries - Costa Rica and Angola - come very close. 🔸Only 16% of countries have a transparent and credible commitment to phase out 🛢️ fossil fuel ⛽ subsidies. 🔸81% of wealthy countries are failing to contribute to their proportional share of the US$100 billion international climate finance goal, or to set future finance targets that would meet such a share. For this year’s Assessing Sovereign Climate-related Opportunities and Risks (ASCOR) report, the countries assessed represent 85% of global greenhouse gas emissions, 90% of global GDP and 100% of three main sovereign bond market indices. The significant increase from the initial 25 to 70 countries makes the ASCOR tool a gamechanger for investors seeking to integrate climate considerations into their decision-making on sovereign bond investments. For the assessment results, access the ASCOR tool: https://lnkd.in/eyp5yWxe This report was written by Antonina Scheer, Camila Cristancho-Duarte, Simon Dietz, Setenay Hızlıok, Johannes Honneth, Sylvan Lutz, Giorgia Monsignori and Carmen Nuzzo of the TPI Centre, and Rory Sullivan, Chronos Sustainability. With special thanks to Claudia Gollmeier at Colchester Global Investors Limited, and Mark Manning at Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment, for their review of this report. The report was edited by Georgina Kyriacou. ASCOR is co-chaired by Victoria Barron at GIB Asset Management, Claudia Gollmeier at Colchester Global Investors, Esther Law at Amundi Asset Management and Adam Matthews at the The Church of England Pensions Board. The project is supported by Chronos Sustainability. #NDCs #ClimateFinance #TransitionFinance #NCQG #COP29
