COLLECTIVE
Architecture and Planning
An international architecture office practicing Architecture, Interiors, Urban Design, and Exhibition Design.
About us
COLLECTIVE is an international architecture office practicing Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design, and Exhibition Design. We are headquartered in Hong Kong, with teams in Shenzhen, London, Madrid, Perth and Los Angeles. COLLECTIVE remains globally oriented while strongly rooted in Asia. We are a research and concept driven architecture practice that offers powerful narratives, and insists on Clarity, Beauty and Function. COLLECTIVE practices Design as a Methodology, instead of a Style. We offer a diverse portfolio of work, eager to work with new typologies while avoiding repetitive aesthetic approaches. The nature of COLLECTIVE focuses not on a Single Creator but a Collective of Critics. Building on the convergence of a ‘collective’ of diverse merits, we engage our projects with our team’s wide spectrum of international expertise, along with our clients and collaborators in various disciplines, challenging the status quo of the “named” architecture office. Founded by Betty Ng in 2015, COLLECTIVE is co-directed by Chi Yan Chan, Juan Minguez and Katja Lam. We are a diverse team with intercontinental backgrounds. The Directors at COLLECTIVE have previously practiced at Pritzker Prize winning studios of Rem Koolhaas/OMA and Herzog & de Meuron, leading projects worldwide in Directorship and Senior positions. COLLECTIVE is a RIBA Chartered Practice.

COLLECTIVE's drawing on architectural details has been featured in the latest issue of Harvard Design Magazine (No. 52: Instruments of Service), published by Harvard University Graduate School of Design, alongside contributions from renowned practitioners and thinkers shaping the future of design. Thank you, Robin Albrecht and Meghan Ryan Sandberg, for including us in this issue! "Harvard Design Magazine 52: Instruments of Service, guest edited by Elizabeth Bowie Christoforetti and Jacob Reidel, examines the state of architectural practice today. Once asserted to be the “mother art” (Frank Lloyd Wright) and “the ultimate goal of all creative activity” (Walter Gropius), architecture over the past century has lost its purchase on such grandiose claims to creative primacy and world-building. At the same time, however, architecture remains a ubiquitous point of reference for a wide range of disciplines and protagonists that influence the design of the things we use and the environments we inhabit. The issue starts with one simple prompt: what do architects actually make and how is this changing?" 📖 Explore more about the issue and pick up your copy here: https://lnkd.in/gm9FZMnN #COLLECTIVE #HarvardDesignMagazine #Architecture

Yesterday, our directors Betty Ng, Chi-Yan Chan, and Juan Minguez, alongside Denis Tsang of Rocco Design Architects Associates and Senior Project Manager Denise Ng at New World Development Company Limited co-led the tour of 83 King Lam Street as part of the AIA International Conference 2024 spearheaded by AIA Hong Kong. The event brought together a curious group of industry professionals, together with AIA HK Chapter Vice-President Eric Ho, and Co-Founders of New Office Works Evelyn Ting and Paul Tse, AIA, concluded with a 4-way conversation on young practices. We are so excited to have received Kimberly Dowdell, 2024 President of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Winston Yeo, Board Member of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) who have attended the tour, and our gratitude to AIA Hong Kong for the invitation to lead this tour of the 83 King Lam Street development, alongside New Office Works' Cheung Sha Wan Pier Canopy, investigating “A New Generation of Public Spaces” in Hong Kong by two young practices. Reflecting on the event, we are reminded of the power of collaboration and the importance of cross-generation nurturing. We are extremely grateful for the beautiful matchmaking by New World Development Company Limited, putting Rocco Design Architects Associates and COLLECTIVE together. We look forward to future opportunities to learn and grow with such a dynamic community, both in Hong Kong and internationally. We are especially grateful to all the participants who joined us, your presence made all the difference. Here’s to more meaningful dialogues and collaborative projects ahead! 📸: Betty Ng, Juan Minguez, Sophie C. Last month, we celebrated the opening of our project: Christie's new Asia Pacific headquarters at The Henderson, an iconic 36-storey tower designed by Zaha Hadid Architects in the heart of Central, Hong Kong. Spanning 50,000 square feet across the 6th to 9th floors, our design integrates a saleroom, museum-standard galleries, dedicated client lounges, and open offices. Christie’s new Asia Pacific home now serves as a one-stop central hub for collectors, delivering an unparalleled client experience in the auction industry. To align with Christie’s forward-thinking vision and support their year-round events with minimal setup time and environmental impact, the design incorporates a meticulously planned innovative changeover strategy. The strategy utilizes a series of large, electronically movable walls and sliding walls that can easily transform the spatial layout of the gallery spaces on the 6th and 7th floors. Additionally, an internal staircase connecting the 6th, 7th, and 8th floors serves as a vertical gallery for curated displays, enriching the experience for all visitors. Advanced AV technology ensures seamless transitions for live auctions and broadcasts, offering flexibility for all stakeholders, from collectors to staff. This project represents a comprehensive architectural effort to create a space where art and objects shine, while also providing an infrastructure that’s future-ready for Christie’s growth. The end result wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. Special thanks to all who contributed to the project: JLL Hong Kong J. Roger Preston Ltd. 🌊 In Hong Kong, the appropriation of public space has always been a source of innovation. Be it through the creation of a new relationship with water 🌅 or through the creative use of intermediate levels 🏙️. In this project tour, we experience two new public spaces in Cheung Sha Wan in Kowloon that have been creatively transformed by two award-winning firms in Hong Kong, New Office Works and COLLECTIVE 🏆. Across the urban fabric of Cheung Sha Wan, we will explore two editions of public spaces 🛤️ and the stories of collaboration 🤝 between them and two major property developers to bring these projects to life 🌟. We are pleased to announce that our project AGORA has been longlisted in the Restaurant and Bar Interior category of Dezeen Awards 2024. This year, the awards received over 4,130 entries from 82 countries, and AGORA is among the 141 interior projects in the running to win an award later this year. Set within the historic walls of Tai Kwun, a former prison hall in Hong Kong, AGORA was crafted to honor its significant cultural context. Without altering the original structure, we transformed the space into a Spanish fine-dining restaurant, blending a warm Mediterranean atmosphere with a deep respect for the historical architecture. Stay tuned for further updates as we continue this exciting journey! #dezeenawards
