We link food companies with charities to redistribute surplus food from where it is plentiful, to where there is a need.
About us
Feeding Hong Kong is a Hong Kong registered charity with a mission to fight hunger and reduce the amount of quality food being sent to landfills. We serve as the link between food companies with surplus and charities with need. We collect, sort, store and redistribute surplus food to charities running food assistance programmes, and also raise awareness about food insecurity, food waste and food banking. We are Hong Kong’s sole accredited member of the Global Food Banking Network, an international organisation dedicated to creating and strengthening food banks and national food bank networks. We offer a range of opportunities for you to fulfill your CSR commitments and actively invest in the community. Our experience spans strategic partnerships, engagement campaigns, team building initiatives, employee fundraising and more! We’re celebrating International Volunteer Day today, and we literally don’t know where we’d be without ours! In just this last year, we’ve welcomed over 230 groups of volunteers into our facility for our ‘Warehouse Workout’ sessions; sorting, quality controlling, packing and stacking an average of 2 tonnes of quality surplus food for every 2-3 hour session, ready for redistribution to our charity partners! A big shout out to over 3,300 volunteers who have joined these groups. Between you, you have sorted a staggering 478 tonnes of food. Plus our Bread Runners just keep rising to the challenge. Over 1,400 volunteers have collected leftover bread from their local bakeries, rescuing more than 8 tonnes of fresh bread, sandwiches, salads and pastries. Massive thanks to these individuals for their commitment, week in and week out. We hope we’ll be seeing more amazing volunteers joining our Bread Runs and Warehouse Workout sessions in 2025; muscle-toning, learning about food waste, fun with friends, all guaranteed! 😉 #InternationalVolunteerDay

Hot on the royal heels of receiving a very well-deserved OBE at the honours Investiture last week, from Her Royal Highness, Anne, the Princess Royal, for services to the community, our founder and CEO, Gabrielle Kirstein OBE , has now been featured by Tatler Asia as one of Asia’s Most Influential for her influence and commitment to social welfare in HK. Gabrielle is the very beating heart of Feeding Hong Kong, initially inspired by the shock of seeing perfectly good bread thrown in the bins at the back of a bakery one evening, over 15 years ago. Today, Feeding Hong Kong rescues 1,250 tonnes of quality surplus food annually, supporting 3,750,000 meals for vulnerable communities in Hong Kong through a network of 170+ charities. Throughout this time, Gabrielle has shown incredible vision, clarity, drive and agility, steering our organisation through the inevitable storm created by the pandemic, never ever giving up and always putting her mission, and serving the community, first. We would also like to congratulate Jeffrey Andrews, Catherine Gurtin, Kay McArdle, Shalini Mahtani and Jeff Rotmeyer for the recognition of their role in supporting under-served communities in our city.

Reflecting on a remarkable fundraising programme, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Hong Kong Legal Walk for their unwavering support! The month-long event has concluded, leaving behind a trail of generosity and unity that will continue to impact lives within our community. Feeding Hong Kong was delighted to be walking alongside as one of the beneficiaries of this fabulous month-long event, which raised an incredible HK$610,000 for three local charities; Pathfinders, Helping Hand and ourselves. This will enable us to support over 20,000 meals for vulnerable people - that's food that will go to feed people rather than landfills :) A big thank you to everyone who participated for going the extra mile to help touch countless lives in our community. You have walked, fundraised and taken enormous strides towards making a difference! #HKLW2024 #CommunityImpact #FeedingHongKong

Today Feeding Hong Kong is 13 years old! We’re officially in our teenage years! • That means we’re old enough to stand on our own, but still need the support of those around us • We’re rapidly growing out of our space, and will definitely need more room to spread out • We love our friendships, and can’t wait to grow our circle of friends in the future • We’re full of passion & brimming with ideas to make a difference! Massive thanks to our closest family, friends and community who have shaped the teenage personality we are today, holding our hands as we’ve grown from strength to strength. And watch out as we get even bigger, establish new relationships, find new ways to get noticed, and continue to disrupt the status quo! Happy Birthday Feeding Hong Kong!

The Community Chest of Hong Kong supports over 165 welfare organisations and we are thrilled to be one of them! With a mission to address the imminent needs of society and pro-actively assist the underprivileged, a portion of funds raised through The Community Chest have been donated to Feeding Hong Kong for the last 10 years. It was an honour to host a group of representatives from The Community Chest at our warehouse earlier this month to introduce our food rescue operations and organisational work, including our past achievements, future development plans, and prospects for our services. A huge thank you to The Community Chest for their commitment to supporting communities in Hong Kong through innovative fundraising, careful due diligence and passion to make a change.

We’re pretty chuffed to be receiving donations from one of Hong Kong’s finest artisanal bakeries, Bakehouse by Grégoire Michaud! The infamous Gregoire Michaud and his team have been true to their sense of community by donating Bakehouse’s coveted sourdough breads, fine pastries and more on a weekly basis since 2017. This has amounted to almost 50 tonnes of baked brilliance, shared with vulnerable people in Hong Kong! Bakehouse is also part of our Bread Run programme, which means you can sign up to help collect these delicious delights at the end of the day from their shops in Soho and Wan Chai and drop them directly to the Feeding Hong Kong warehouse in Yau Tong, ready for redistribution. Thanks Bakehouse for your passion, aspiration to redefine the impact of the bakery landscape and big hearts. We most definitely knead you!

We are very excited to announce the launch of the Goodman 'Veggie Van'; our brand new 5-tonne van, powered by Goodman, the specialist global industrial property group. Aligned with the Goodman purpose of ‘making space for greatness’, the Goodman ‘Veggie Van’ has a loading capacity of 2600kg and the compact design means it can navigate, pick up and offload in our more densely populated areas, ultimately fuelling our ability to collect more surplus food and reduce CO2 emissions by saving food from going to landfill. In turn, we can support more meals for frontline charities, on our mission to bridge the gap between surplus and need. Massive thanks to Goodman for driving this opportunity to bring more quality food to more well-deserving people! Watch out for our van about town. Goodman

Today is #WorldFoodDay, yet sadly over 2.8 billion people in the world cannot afford a diet containing the right nutrients and diversity needed to thrive and survive. Food is our human right. It is the third most basic right after air and water. It is essential to our life, and the life of the planet, however right here in Hong Kong, almost 1.4 million people are living below the poverty line, struggling to afford food every day. This World Food Day we are being encouraged to consider our need for greater food diversity, nutrition, affordability, accessibility and safety; all things that are at the heart of the Feeding Hong Kong mission. With that in mind, we have put Vicky Lau, one of our favourite Michelin award-winning chefs, Feeding Hong Kong Board Director and founder of the renowned Tate Dining Room and Mora, to the test, and challenged Chef Vicky to rustle up an irresistibly mouth-watering and wholesome dish working with a bare minimum of diverse, yet balanced, staple ingredients, supplemented with a few smart purchases, and using very simple cooking equipment. We were not disappointed! Every year we distribute over 18,000 Food Parcels for vulnerable communities in Hong Kong, including 2,500 especially to mark World Food Day.. The ingredients Chef Vicky works with in this video are a typical balance of food items that we supply in each parcel, enough for 10 meals. We hope you enjoy the video for a recipe that’s great for seniors and children, packed full of veggies and other key staples, delivering an incredible, tasty dish, bursting with diverse ingredients, nutrients and wise ideas! And this World Food Day, let’s remember, the right to food is about far more than calories for survival – it’s about healthy diets, variety and the ability to flourish. #WorldFoodDay #VickyLau #TateDiningRoom #Mora
