  • This is a good example of how impact storytelling can take a different & fun form ! Please consider supporting if these comics can compliment your impact work in some way.

A few years ago, I developed a set of three comics in collaboration with a team of young visual artists and an arts professor. The comics aim to impart the ideas, concepts, methods, and issues in social entrepreneurship (SE) — an instrument to create social value and public value — to tackle problems of public interest from poverty, discrimination to climate challenges. We can view SE as a business, innovative way of doing NGO, as a public-private partnership, an external experiment with nil risks for the state, or a decentralised public service. Pick one. After soft launch for a few years, we launched the English version of the comics, which are now available in Amazon. There are three of them, but so far we managed to enlist two of them in Amazon. The insights, visual portrayal, dialogues, symbols and messages in the comics came from more than 5 years of fieldwork that involve many social entrepreneurs who started with nil resources but wild imaginations of a better world, talking to people experiencing hardships (poverty, stigma, discrimination, disability), policy makers who try to make the world a better place, and young people who are lost and in need of meaning in life. This work symbolizes our thirst to bring about innovation in our work. While this counts little, if not none, in conventional metricized world of academia, it now counts very well as part of creating impact cases. Going to the popular mass is equally exciting to having just a few elites who read our work. Grant funders become new believers that these are no less important than publishing in (top) journals. How can this benefit academics, students, and parents? *For academics* and students, the comics can be used as case discussion, role playing (what would you do if you were one of the characters in the story), conceptual analysis of key concepts and their applications (hybrid organization, bricolage, effectuation, opportunity discovery/creation/actualization, empowerment, open innovation, benefit corporation, voluntary simplicity, impact measurement, human motivations, sociological factors in human endeavors, to psychological concepts such as compassion, greed, happiness to see others doing well (happy-for-ness)). If I can find more resources, I will send out some of the comics for free for your own trial. Feel free to be in touch if you have questions on the comics. 🙏🙏 Mad Spicy Resto: a story of a gambling addict who lost everything including his family and who found his life back after discovering his talent as a chef and then set up a social enterprise to empower disadvantaged others (see the synopsis in Amazon) https://lnkd.in/gzemN59z The O’s Lab: a story of a girl who hates math and whose mother was retrenched but found their way into forming a sustainable enterprise with some like minded friends (see the synopsis in Amazon) https://lnkd.in/g9C_kFs3

  • A small request for the next 3 days, and thank you, for our friends who would like to contribute to our next stage of LinkedIn growth. LinkedIn polls have a word-count limit, so to clarify some of our "jargon" used in the small poll: "Consultants" below, are one of our core pillars in our incubation programme. Check out our earlier posts on some advice a small pool of our consultants have for our incubatees to succeed in our programme. "SPO" - social purpose organisation, comprising both registered charitable organisations (eg S88 NGOs in Hong Kong) or for-profit limited-by-shares companies (eg social enterprises, impact ventures). We hope to gather as many responses as practically possible !
