The Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF) and Hong Kong Institute for Monetary and Financial Research (HKIMR) hosted a panel discussion on “Decentralised Finance (DeFi), the Metaverse and Generative AI: Opportunities and Challenges for the Financial Service Industry” at Hong Kong FinTech Week on 28 October 2024. The session commenced with opening remarks by Mr Norman Chan, Chairman of the Institute of Web 3.0 Hong Kong. Mr Chan noted that the developments of Web3 offers enormous opportunities for Hong Kong but there are plenty of challenges lying ahead. One of the key challenges is whether the #Web3 industry, working closely together with the regulators and policy makers, can promptly develop and showcase some use cases that can demonstrate that Web3 could bring about material practical benefits to the people and the real economy. Mr Enoch Fung, CEO of the AoF and Executive Director of the HKIMR, then moderated the panel discussion featuring distinguished speakers Mr Ernest Ho, Head of Digital Finance of the HKMA, Ms Jennifer Tan, EVP, Strategy Development & Government Affairs, GBA of Ant Group, and Dr Stratos Pourzitakis, Head of Digital Policy APAC at HSBC. The session explored the opportunities and risks that frontier technologies, such as #DeFi, the #metaverse and #generativeAI, will bring about in the financial services industry. The panellist provided their insights on how the latest regulatory landscape globally will shape the future developments of the digital asset ecosystem and Web3 ecosystem. They also discussed the dynamics between traditional finance and DeFi going forward, as the industry continues to push for greater adoption of these frontier technologies. To conclude, the panellists offered some practical tips on how to facilitate closer collaboration between Web3 industry and regulators to foster sustainable development in this space. What an epic day yesterday at the debut of #web3x3 – the world's first basketball tournament at a major FinTech conference 🏀 The energy was off the charts from start to finish at the Blockchain and Digital Assets Forum! Team Chartered (Standard Chartered) took home the championship 🏆 after an intense final showdown against livi bank, while Hang Seng Bank snagged 3rd place in a tough battle with Team Standard! Shoutout to all the teams—Team Chartered, Team Standard, Livibank, and Hang Seng Bank—for bringing the heat and keeping the crowd on their feet! The action didn’t stop between games either! The cheerleaders kicked things off with some serious spirit ✨, and pro dunkers David Carlos and Brodie Stephens threw down in the dunk contest, with Brodie taking the win! We also had an incredible breakdance show that had everyone hyped, and the legendary Mad twinz brought the beats with an unreal beatbox performance before the final!
