2024 Rainbow Ambassador: Prof. Travis Shiu-ki Kong Professor Travis Shiu-ki Kong, a professor of sociology at The University of Hong Kong, has long been dedicated to researching sexuality and LGBTQ+ issues, with a unique focus on the lives of older gay men in Hong Kong. Through his academic work, Prof. Kong strives to drive social change and foster greater understanding and inclusion of sexual minorities in society. One of Prof. Kong’s most significant works, Oral Histories of Older Gay Men in Hong Kong, documents the real-life stories of older gay men, revealing their struggles with social prejudice, family pressures, and health challenges. Using an oral history approach, Prof. Kong captures these rarely told life stories, preserving an essential historical record for Hong Kong. This book was later adapted into the critically acclaimed 2019 film 'Suk Suk', directed by Ray Yeung. 'Suk Suk' garnered widespread recognition and achieved prestigious awards, including “Best Actor” and “Best Supporting Actress” at the Hong Kong Film Awards, “Best Film” and “Best Actor” at the Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards, as well as a nomination for "Best Narrative Feature" at the Golden Horse Awards. As Prof. Kong has expressed, 'Suk Suk' has become a significant symbol of Hong Kong’s LGBTQ+ culture. Prof. Kong’s book also catalysed the founding of Grey and Pride in 2014, Hong Kong’s first and only peer support and charitable organization dedicated to the well-being of older LGBTQ+ individuals. Through regular gatherings, Grey and Pride offers a safe space for older community members to connect and support each other, addressing a segment of society that often receives limited attention. The impact of Prof. Kong's research and the success of 'Suk Suk' further inspired Ray Yeung’s new  film 'All Shall Be Well' (2024), which explores the live of an older lesbian couple, deepening the conversation on LGBTQ+ partnership rights in Hong Kong. Highlight of the Year: Transgender Athletes In a society where the gender binary remains mainstream, sports competitions are commonly divided into men’s and women’s categories, which seems natural. Yet, gender issues have always been a subject of controversy in the sports world. Over a century ago, the debate centered on whether women could participate in the Olympics. Today, the ongoing debate centers on defining athletes' gender. These conversations have sparked opportunities for society to rethink gender altogether. At this year's Olympics, athletes’ gender once again became a focal point of discussion. However, the global community has yet to reach consensus on how to define the athletes' gender eligibility criteria. Even more concerning, athletes' gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics are often misrepresented as attempts to cheat in competitions. What concerns us more is the pressure and prejudice faced by transgender athletes amidst these gender controversies. Their struggles often begin long before they step onto the field.  When gender-friendly locker rooms are not readily available, transgender athletes struggle to find a place to change into their sports attire. When they choose to undergo hormone therapy to align their bodies with their gender identity, transgender athletes often worry about how these changes might affect their performance or even bar them from participating in any official competitions. When their gender expression does not conform to traditional binaries, transgender athletes face overwhelming criticism, with their eligibility questioned without justification, leaving them defenseless even when they try to explain their situation. When transgender athletes choose to live authentically according to their gender identity, it often means they no longer have a place in the sports world, forcing them to give up the athletic careers they love. Their passion for sports and dedication seems to be overshadowed in this gender controversy. We hope society can see transgender athletes for who they are, especially their unique stories—the sweat, persistence, and challenges that come with their identities. Despite these struggles, they continue to train hard and compete. Their stories, courage, and resilience exemplify true sportsmanship and represent the finest interpretation of sporting values.
