Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour Hong Kong celebrates our Global Day of Gratitude on 11 December 2024, where we encourage our colleagues and guests to spare a moment to practice gratitude, both for ourselves and to those around us. We also invite everyone to join us in sending personalised, digital gratitude notes – Gifts of Gratitude – via https://lnkd.in/fmNhrNA. A small expression of gratitude can make a big impact in improving wellbeing for both givers and recipients. From 9 to 13 December, Hyatt Hotels Foundation will also donate US$1 for every digital Gift of Gratitude sent (up to US$50,000) to benefit three nonprofit organisations: Ocean Conservancy, Survivor Alliance (which supports slavery and human trafficking survivors), and Life Project for Youth (which supports employment and entrepreneurship for youth living in extreme poverty). We’re honoured to have been part of the Soil Trust (泥玩) project led by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University School of Design (PolyU Design) and Markus Wernli, which was awarded the 2024 Don Norman Design Award DNDA for “Promising Project”. As part of the Soil Trust initiative, our team learnt to upcycle our hotel’s food waste to create bokashi compost, eco-enzymes, and soil calcium supplements. This repurposed food waste was then distributed to local farmers, providing affordable, low-emissions compost and nutrient amendments to improve soil, crop, and ecosystem health. We are pleased to have helped demonstrate how hotels can better manage food waste and look forward to continuing our efforts for a more sustainable future. This week I had the honour and pleasure of representing our Soil Trust (泥玩) initiative endorsed by #polyudesign at the #DonNormanDesignAwardDNDA to receive our ‘Promising in Humanity-Centred Design’ award. At the ceremony, I was asked to share our learning journey, partially reproduced below. After the presentation, audience members (including practitioners and educators from research, industry and business) commented that Soil Trust offers a blueprint to be implemented elsewhere, the importance of creating experimental learning spaces with lived more-than-human relationships at the center. I am grateful to the entire DNDA team for recognizing our team's accomplishments and for facilitating this invaluable exchange forum! < < - - Soil Trust is designing with and from the past. We are based in Hong Kong known for its frugal traditions. Until the 1960s Hong Kong had a vibrant agricultural sector with about 60% food self-sufficiency which excelled at reintegrating organic wastes including human wastes. Soil Trust is working on rebuilding these frugal capabilities as a way to for the local community to realize land-based responses to climate change. It means to work with existing, readily available resources without the need for complex technologies that often come with hidden costs. In this effort, Soil Trust is a community/industry alliance that enabled a local farm, hotel, retailer and vulnerable ethnic minorities to collectively divert foodwaste toward nourishing soils, and produce crops for families in need. By implementing carbon-reducing fermentation techniques across kitchens we can minimize greenhouse gases, irrigation demand and nutrient runoff. Soil Trust is an emergent and open-ended social learning enterprise that continually reinvents itself. When we started out, our team imagined to launch a “fermentation school” for upcycling food waste into fertilizer and bring together food consumers and producers. Yet, we ended up running our own experimental farm that would invest a reputable hotel, ethnic minority mothers, Community-Supported Agriculture platform, corporate sponsoring and design school. Inviting each of these fellow stakeholders was part of an ongoing co-evolution where Soil Trust remake itself to carry on its mission: Rebuilding ecological capabilities in kitchens and farms to regenerate local soils, foods and tastes with organic excess that otherwise burdens the environment. - - > > https://lnkd.in/gVgpUPmr
