As we wrap up the U.S. holiday shopping season, our SpendingPulse and Mastercard Economics Institute teams share some trends from the most wonderful time of the year. ✨ The most ‘valuable’ time of the year: Overall retail sales saw a 3.8% increase compared to 2023, with consumers responding to deals, especially during the Black Friday period. 🎁 Gift-giving till the last-minute: The last five days of the holiday season accounting for 10% of all holiday spending. 🛒 Clicking all the way: Online remained a preferred choice for consumers, increasing 6.7% YOY. “For the full holiday period, consumers were in the gift-giving mood but stayed savvy with promotions and digital-first shopping. Strong consumer demand, a healthy labor market, and a balanced basket meant a joyous season from start to finish," said Chief Economist, Michelle Meyer, Mastercard Economics Institute.
