Department of Health encouraging Seasonal Influenza Vaccine (SIV) Since the start of the influenza season on January 9, the Centre Health Protection (CHP) has recorded three severe cases of influenza A infection in children who have not received the SIV. Research studies have shown that influenza vaccination can reduce serious complications and lower school absenteeism. Apart from schoolchildren, as Hong Kong has entered the influenza season, the CHP strongly appeal all persons aged six months or above (except those with known contraindications) who have not yet received SIV should act immediately. High-risk groups should also get vaccinated against COVID-19 concurrently to minimise the risk of serious complications and death after infection. Influenza is an acute illness of the respiratory tract caused by influenza viruses. SIV is one of the effective means in preventing influenza and its complications together with reduction in influenza-associated hospitalisation and death. Given that the SIV offers protection against influenza and its complications, all members of the public, except those with known contraindications, should receive SIV annually for personal protection. RSV Vaccines RSV is a common respiratory virus that usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms. Infants and older adults are more likely to develop severe RSV and need hospitalization. Vaccines are available.. Centre for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a single dose of RSV vaccine for older adults to help prevent serious RSV infection and hospitalization. RSV vaccination is recommended for: All adults ages 75 and older. Adults ages 60–74 at increased risk of severe RSV disease. CDC also recommends pregnant women should get a single dose of the maternal RSV vaccine Abrysvo during weeks 32 through 36 of pregnancy, to protect their babies from severe RSV disease. The NHS (UK) website states - The RSV vaccine helps protect against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a common virus that can make babies and older adults seriously ill. It's recommended during pregnancy and for adults aged 75 to 79. The Australian Government government website states - Pregnant women are recommended to receive an RSV vaccine during pregnancy to protect the infant. A single dose of Abrysvo is recommended for pregnant women at 28–36 weeks gestation. RSV vaccine is recommended for: all people aged 75 years and over and people aged 60 years and over with conditions that increase their risk of severe RSV. It is important for pregnant women and those above the age of 60 to discuss with their Doctor. #RSVvaccines #publichealth #protectyourself
