The historic centre of Macau is undergoing an exciting transformation with the opening of Macau M8. This new cultural retail destination, located in a UNESCO World Heritage city, marks a significant addition to the area. Formerly the staff quarters of the post office, the site has been redeveloped in keeping with the historic context. Inspired by the surrounding Portuguese and Chinese architecture, M8 features an innovative use of recycled materials, creating a vibrant mosaic palette. It has also earned a Guinness World Record for “the largest curved surface hot-melt composite stone glass.” Visitors are greeted by a striking sculptural entrance that leads to a central hall, seamlessly connecting them to event areas, art galleries, retail spaces, exhibitions, and restaurants. The rooftop garden offers breathtaking views of Macau’s rich historical district, providing a stunning perspective on the city's heritage. Visit M8 to explore the unique blend of history and modernity it offers! #ovalpartnership #heritageconservation #conversation #community #publicspace #architects #urbanist #sustainability #urbanism #openspace #retaildesign #Macau #M8

We transform cities and create places where you want to be.
About us
We are an award-winning team of international strategic planners, architects and urbanists who conceive and execute leading projects that nurture and sustain the long-term value of a community’s social, ecological and economic capital. We catalyze parallel initiatives to enhance positive community development and to illustrate new ways of building community to inform our design process. Our projects enhance the human experience, tell the story of context, and preserve heritage. They are based on collaboration towards a shared, long-term prosperity, and are designed to leave an enduring and meaningful impact on a city’s livability and sustainability. OUR APPROACH Successful projects invariably tell compelling stories of context and give citizenry new ways of relating to the urban dynamic. We want to have an enduring impact on a city’s livability by supporting meaningful sustainability and honoring community. For us, that means creating spaces that meet the demands of the twenty-first century and enhance the human experience. By respecting that people, place, community and planet are separate parts of a whole, and by engaging them in the process. By fostering and nurturing interactions and exchanges that build livable streets and reinforce social bonds. By honoring site and heritage. And by furthering the long-term viability and growth of the social and economic capital of our communities.

‘Do you fight against the water or do you live with the water?’ Dutch architect Koen Olthuis asked in 2023. With rising sea levels an issue the world over, architects like Olthuis and Bjarke Ingels are creating innovative potential solutions in places such as the Maldives and Busan. These projects form an intriguing contemporary reimagining of the type of water dwelling we in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia have practiced for millennia. But can they create a modern city? And do we have a choice? Artists across the Asia Pacific region are using their work to respond to the global environmental crisis. Philippine artist Leeroy New became known for a pop culture moment when he designed Lady Gaga’s sculptural silicone ‘muscle dress’. After that, New launched his Aliens of Manila series, in which he transforms used plastic kitchen items and other household waste into psychedelic wearable sculptures, bringing his statement on plastic waste outside the gallery and into the public discourse. New’s work draws on a heritage that normalised repurposing over disposing, and he is among a number of Asian artists using their own stories to spotlight similar issues. Is it possible for humanity to live in harmony with the sea? When the British first came to Hong Kong in 1841, they counted 7,450 people living in the city — and 2,000 living offshore in boats. These descendants of the indigenous ethnic groups of southern China had been living on the water for thousands of years, as did other communities in Southeast Asia. Today, architects are revisiting this model in the light of rising sea levels: work is underway on floating cities in places like Busan and the Maldives. Can we draw on these traditions to create the coastal cities of the future? Read more at https://lnkd.in/gVdiwkdU

"Obstacles are not merely barriers; they are opportunities for architects to address real problems." Recently, our Project Director, Norman Li, shared insights at The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) public Architectural Talk titled "The Obstacles of Architecture," held at Central Market. He explored how obstacles in architecture present essential challenges, especially in vibrant communities like Sheung Wan. Norman emphasised the importance of balancing commercial and social interests, highlighting how our design for 42 Tung St integrates with its surroundings and in keeping with local architectural context. In a neighbourhood with over a century of history, balancing development and context poses significant challenges. The tong laus (唐樓) in the area, with their 3-4 meter high floors, reflect the living spaces of the daily life. This offers a clue to the development of our architectural language. #OvalPartnership #HKIA #SheungWan #CommunityDevelopment #UrbanDesign #SustainableArchitecture #HistoricPreservation #DesignChallenges #UrbanPlanning #42TungSt #Architecture #AwardWinning #Community

We had an amazing time at ULI’s first event in Vietnam! It was such an honour to join the opening panel discussion, “Turning Vietnam into an Urban Powerhouse,” alongside Edwin Chee (SLP), Michael Piro (Indochina Capital), and Ronald Tay (CapitaLand Vietnam), with our Senior Business Development Manager, Debarati Basu, moderating. The conversation was packed with insights on Vietnam’s economic growth, regional collaboration, the rise of the middle class, an ambitious young population, and opportunities in sustainable urban development. One word that really resonated with everyone - Patience! #TheOvalPartnership #ULI Urban Land Institute #UrbanDevelopment #Vietnam #Sustainability #UrbanPowerhouse #EconomicGrowth #FutureOfCities #SustainableDevelopment #SmartCities #Vietnam2024 #UrbanPlanning #RegionalCollaboration #YouthInDevelopment #BuildingVietnam #PatienceInProgress #CommunityGrowth #InnovativeVietnam #RealEstateDevelopment

Exciting News! "The Scents and the Soil" has been shortlisted for "Furniture of the Year" at the FRAME Awards 2024! One judge remarked: "The final piece is a testament to carefully developed artisanal work." By embracing traditional techniques, the design process became a journey of innovation and craftsmanship. Crafted from a 400-year-old reclaimed camphor tree, the design pays homage to history and the essence of the material. This sculptural concierge counter reimagines sustainability, transforming a fallen tree into an artwork that retains its natural form and rustic charm. It’s more than furniture—it’s a statement on sustainability and design excellence. Huge congratulations to our project team, Justin C. K. Lau, HK Timberbank, Ricci Wong and our client Hang Lung Properties , Edward Tsui for this achievement!
