  • Over the years, Pacific Basin has nurtured numerous shipping talent, many of whom have successfully transitioned from trainees to management positions, showcasing the company's commitment to professional development and growth within the industry. Stepping into 2025, it marks the 20th anniversary of our General Manager of Risk and Governance, Yoyo Chu’s career in Pacific Basin, and we have invited Yoyo to share her reflections and insights regarding her career with the company. *** My professional journey with Pacific Basin has been a remarkable adventure, filled with diverse experiences and opportunities for growth. It all began in London in September 2005, where I joined the company as a trainee. In early 2006, a fantastic chance arose to become part of the China Investment team, APMIG. Relocating to Hong Kong was quite the shift, but it turned into an extraordinary learning adventure, allowing me to observe China's astonishing growth firsthand. After my time in China investment team, I spotted an opportunity in the Hong Kong chartering desk and made the leap to that department. About a year and a half into the chartering role, I was presented with a chance to relocate to Auckland. After completing my MBA at Imperial College London, I was offered the role of General Manager in 2017. I am currently back in Hong Kong, taking on the role of General Manager of Risk and Governance represents a significant shift and a steep learning curve. Risk and governance are crucial for shipping companies as they assist in identifying, understanding, and mitigating risks effectively. Implementing sound governance practices, such as transparency and accountability, can help shipping companies manage risks and enhance their overall ESG performance. By integrating risk management principles with corporate governance, shipping companies can adopt a comprehensive approach to risk control and strategic decision-making. This holistic strategy not only protects against losses and negative publicity but also supports the transition to a zero-carbon future. My journey with Pacific Basin has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunities to grow and make a meaningful impact within the company. #PacificBasin #WithYouForTheLongHaul

  • We are pleased to share that our global shore-side activities' environmental impacts have been audited by the WWF's Low-carbon Office Operation Programme (LOOP PLUS). We received a certificate of recognition for our ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into our daily business operations using the LOOPPLUS programme. The programme aims to facilitate companies to collect and report on KPIs in the environmental subject area and to set a timeframe for emission reduction with a world-recognised standard. 4Cs (Commit, Calculate, Cut and Communicate) concept is at the core of LOOP PLUS. Since 2020, we offset the annual carbon emissions from our office activities, commuting and business and crew travel, with carbon credits supplied by Hong Kong-headquartered power company CLP whose independently verified carbon credits are derived from CLP’s wind and solar energy projects in Asia. In 2023, we offset a total of 8,679 metric tonnes of carbon emissions resulting from our global shore-side activities. #PacificBasin #WithYouForTheLongHaul #WWF #LOOPPLUS #EnvironmentalResponsibility #SustainabilityInShipping

  • At Pacific Basin, we always hope to reward our crew with quality time well spent with their family members. Earlier this month, we collaborated with Tristarr Maritime, our manning agent in India, to host a “Meet & Greet” event for our beloved crews and their families in Dehradun. Seafarers from Dehradun and the surrounding areas gathered for the occasion, relishing delicious food and delightful music. Many thanks to everyone who attended this memorable event! #PacificBasin #WithYouForTheLongHaul #Tristarr #OurHeroesAtSea

  • Pacific Basin had this year donated to WWF Hong Kong’s marine conservation and education programme, therefore we had been invited for two eco tours to the WWF Hoi Ha Marine Life Centre and the surrounding protected marine park in Sai Kung in November and December. More than 60 PB colleagues, along with their families and friends, attended the eco tour. Participants gained insights into the importance of coral, the role of sandy shore ecosystems and the conservation efforts for coral communities in Hoi Ha. A glass-bottom boat trip was organised to allow our participants to observe some of these species close up. Hoi Ha Wan was among the first marine parks in Hong Kong and is home to more than 60 coral and 120 fish species. Thank you WWF for inviting us to these wonderful eco tours! #PacificBasin #WithYouForTheLongHaul #WWF #EcoTour #EnvironmentalResponsibility #Sustainability #HoiHaMarineCentre #HoiHaWan

  • We are honoured to have received the Gold Award in the Most Sustainable Companies and Organisations (MSCO) section (Non-Hang Seng Index (Small Market Capitalisation) Category) at the HKICPA’s Best Corporate Governance and ESG Awards 2024, making us the Gold winner three years in a row! The MSCO Awards aim to reflect “sustainability” in its broadest sense, not merely focusing on ESG. This highest category of awards gives recognition to companies that have performed to a high standard in both CG and ESG, and that are taking steps to integrate these two elements into their values, strategies and operations. This recognition is a testament to our ongoing efforts in cultivating the right tone at the top and maintaining a culture that reinforces the Board's vision and core values. We believe that this approach helps us drive our long-term sustainability strategy. #PacificBasin #WithYouForTheLongHaul #HKICPA #SustainabilityInShipping #ESGawards
