Over the years, Pacific Basin has nurtured numerous shipping talent, many of whom have successfully transitioned from trainees to management positions, showcasing the company's commitment to professional development and growth within the industry. Stepping into 2025, it marks the 20th anniversary of our General Manager of Risk and Governance, Yoyo Chu’s career in Pacific Basin, and we have invited Yoyo to share her reflections and insights regarding her career with the company. *** My professional journey with Pacific Basin has been a remarkable adventure, filled with diverse experiences and opportunities for growth. It all began in London in September 2005, where I joined the company as a trainee. In early 2006, a fantastic chance arose to become part of the China Investment team, APMIG. Relocating to Hong Kong was quite the shift, but it turned into an extraordinary learning adventure, allowing me to observe China's astonishing growth firsthand. After my time in China investment team, I spotted an opportunity in the Hong Kong chartering desk and made the leap to that department. About a year and a half into the chartering role, I was presented with a chance to relocate to Auckland. After completing my MBA at Imperial College London, I was offered the role of General Manager in 2017. I am currently back in Hong Kong, taking on the role of General Manager of Risk and Governance represents a significant shift and a steep learning curve. Risk and governance are crucial for shipping companies as they assist in identifying, understanding, and mitigating risks effectively. Implementing sound governance practices, such as transparency and accountability, can help shipping companies manage risks and enhance their overall ESG performance. By integrating risk management principles with corporate governance, shipping companies can adopt a comprehensive approach to risk control and strategic decision-making. This holistic strategy not only protects against losses and negative publicity but also supports the transition to a zero-carbon future. My journey with Pacific Basin has been incredibly rewarding, and I am grateful for the opportunities to grow and make a meaningful impact within the company. #PacificBasin #WithYouForTheLongHaul
