2024 started with major uncertainty around US monetary policy, stemming from persistent inflation and evidence that previous rate hikes hadn’t severely harmed growth, but by Q3, a more favorable macro outlook raised hopes of a "soft landing," similar to 1995 Fed easing under Greenspan. Despite resulting optimism surrounding risk assets, a soft landing scenario remains rare, with historical data showing only one clear-cut case over the past 50 years—Greenspan's 1995 rate cuts—that didn’t trigger a recession. Notably, Treasury yields have risen sharply this cycle after the Fed's pivot, signaling investor caution that this easing might be brief.
