SCMP feature Four Peaks Race! "Sailors and Runners show their mettle in Hong Kong's Four Peaks Race" is the title of a wonderful article in today's Post Magazine about the Four Peaks Race. SCMP writer Martin Williams has captured the authentic spirit of the race and explains how it has evolved over the years since it first took place in 1985. Sailability is featured too, including a quote from Kay and a photograph showing three of our courageous runners. About us
'Sailability' is a world wide organisation but is operated independently in each location and country. It started some 35 years ago in the UK and has spread rapidly across the USA; Australia, New Zealand, Asia & Europe. The aims of each Sailability programme are very similar. Simply put, 'Sailability' provides the facility for the disabled community to have the opportunity to sail or at least, to have a water based experienced. In Hong Kong, we have bi-lingual programmes (Cantonese & English). These are open to everyone with a disability provided they are resident in Hong Kong. Based at Hebe Haven Yacht Club in Pak Sha Wan (near Sai Kung), sailing now takes place on most days of the week. We have now had some 420 people take part to date and this numbers includes individuals, schools, other charities & NGO's. We are able to provide our service to nearly all types of disability - both physical and those with learning difficulties.

Sailability’s Saturday Sailing enjoyed light winds yesterday morning which subsided and then, sadly, vanished entirely in the afternoon. Some sailors were practicing ahead of the Hansa World Championships which take place in Australia in late March. Everyone was delighted to welcome back Quincy who was returning to after several years. The lack of wind meant the group returned to the club early than usual and used the time to give the boats a special wash and clean, inside and out. Sailability depends entirely on donations and sponsorship to be able to operate. To find out more about how you can support our programmes visit https://lnkd.in/gAqSACJ

Mohan at Aberdeen Boat Club Four Peaks Race 2025. Thanks to the Mohan's Sponsors: Generali Hong Kong, Lockly Smart Lock and Solaris Yachts Asia. Thanks also to Andrew at Ronsil who did the new sponsors logo’s on MoHan’s hull. This weekend saw Sailability Hong Kong joining the epic Aberdeen Boat Club’s Four Peaks Race, for the 3rd consecutive year. Typically taking 24 hours to complete, the race required the Sailability crew to have fine seamanship and sailing skills on the water, safe transfers from MoHan to the shore and back to MoHan by kayak, and then runners able to tackle tough terrain before kayaking back to the boat to continue on to the next peak. Tactics, practice and stamina play a big part. It requires the highest levels of fitness, and this unique sporting challenge is considered one of the toughest competitions in the region. MoHan was one of only 8 boats to complete the race this year, an amazing achievement for our disabled and able-bodied team which included people with conditions such as muscular dystrophy and polio, and a lower amputee blade runner in his 70s. Celvin our SEN runner now has the accolade of being the first person with a disability, in the history of this race, to run the 4 Peaks. Sailability Hong Kong are overwhelmed by this result and happy to have been able to support Celvin and his Mum to achieve their dream, whilst showcasing to the world the ability and potential of all who join us at Sailability Hong Kong. Kay Rawbone was onboard this year as she has been for each of the 3 years that Sailability has taken part in the Four Peaks. She expressed her “thanks to Skipper Tai Leung and his brother Kelvin who looked after us during the whole journey ensuring safety on board, our Para Sailors who managed a huge part of the helming, main and gib support and of course our runners and kayakers who showed their abilities to everyone competing this mammoth running task.” Kay continued, “Thank you to the ABC event team and sponsors and to our own sponsors as we work together to make these extraordinary events happen. I think you know where my heart lies and every day we make a difference to the lives of everyone who joins us. I’m so proud of our team for this race. Four other boats retired, and we carried on with no complaints from our crew. The resilience and determination shown by everyone was second to none and an example to us all. An amazing experience once again as together we continue to show peoples abilities and break down barriers in the world of sailing.” www.sailability.org.hk #makesailingaccessible #generaliasia #solarisyachts #solaris #mohan #lockly #hhyc #rhkyc #aberdeenboatclub #sailing #fourpeaks #resilience #parasailing #inclusivesport

Sailability HK’s Co Founder and CEO Kay Rawbone BEM has been appointed Chair of the World Sailing Para Sailing Committee ! Kay first heard about the appointment a few weeks ago and was “overwhelmed”. Speaking exclusively to Sailability HK social media, she said, “It was such a shock and at the same time such an honour, not just for me but all those who have worked and supported us since 2009 to be where we are today on the world stage. It really puts HK on the map too. Support from so many over the years has made us one of the best in the world and we should all be so proud of that. Thank you to you ALL.” Looking ahead at the challenge Kay went on to say, “There is work to do. From a good working base, I hope we can encourage more para sailing in Asia and many other less and middle developed countries around the world. Encouraging more MNAS and yacht clubs to support para sailing as we continue to educate people about the talents and abilities of our sailors, increasing diversity in sailing as we have in HK. The benefits of sailing to us all is immeasurable and should be available to all.” “How will we do this? With a passionate committee willing to share ideas and encourage MNAs around the world to open up and provide opportunities to EVERYONE. Together we can do this!” www.sailability.org.hk #makesailingaccessible #GeneraliHK #scallywagfoundation #generaliasia #morethansailing #mohan #Generali #hansa #hhyc #rhkyc #worldsailing #parasailing #solaris #hksf

Sun Hung Kai & Co Around The Island Race 2025 Sailability took part in this iconic sailing event again last weekend. This race has a long history starting in 1864 and this year some 227 boats took part. For the Sailability team the day started early when the crew met up at 0500 hours at Hebe Haven Yacht Club! MoHan crew members for this race were: - Skipper Tai, Bowman - David B, Head sail trimmer - Ah Lung, Main trimmer - Sweder van Dipten, Head Sail trimmer - Mark Poon, Helm - Sui Ming, Jib trimmer - Daphne, Jib support - Ransom, Navigator - Ben, Head sail trimmer - KK, Main sail support - Ken, Helm support On the way from HHYC to the start line the sun rose after MoHan passed Clear Water Bay. After arriving at start line, the crew hoisted the main sail and stayed near the start line. Skipper Tai said, “The wind was weak and the tide was strong against us but it was important to get a good start.” “As the time got closer to the 0840 start time, more and more boats were gathering around. In the light wind and strong current we tried our best to cross the start line, finally we passed the start line but the conditions meant that for nearly an hour we sat on the water near North Point.” In fact, the breeze was so light, it was approaching noon before MoHan reached Lei Yue Mun; she had been in the harbour for 3 hours. Thankfully, after passing Lei Yue Mun the wind got better. Tai continued, “We headed to Cape D’aguilar with a better speed, and after passing Cape D’agullar we sailed with the headsails all the way to Cyberport only for the wind to then drop again.” “The whole crew worked hard and focused on trimming the sails and doing many tacks with the light wind.” MoHan re entered the harbour at around 1600 and kept sailing until 1700 (the cut off time). Despite sailing until the last minute, she couldn’t reach the finish line near Kellet Island by 1700. “We tried our best in the Race,” said Tai. By the time they arrived back at HHYC, the time was around 2000 hours, so the Mohan crew had been on board for 15 hours in total. “Despite the long day, all crew members enjoyed the race. And we learned as a crew.” Tai vowed, “We’ll be back next year!” Title Sponsor: Sun Hung Kai & Co Supporting Sponsors: St. James's Place Asia & Middle East, World Maritime Merchants Forum Partners: Beau-Rivage Palace Lausanne, Sail-World To support any of our programmes at Sailability HK, visit our website www.sailability.org.hk #makesailingaccessible #morethansailing #sailing #rhkyc #hhyc #inclusionmatters #mohan #solaris #generali #GeneraliHK #atir #hksf #SunHungKai #stjamesplace #scallywagfoundation #generaliasia #generalinsurance #Generali4Sustainability #Lockly

A few weeks ago we posted about Joseph being selected to join this years Outward Bound expedition which was heading to Okinawa. But you may recall the weather in South China around that time was a series of late season typhoons! So sadly, the Spirit of Hong Kong boat turned back after 3 days at sea, to ensure the safety of the boat and all onboard. When conditions permitted, the alternative route chosen was to Kaohsiung and then anti-clockwise around Taiwan island. Boat and crew including Joseph arrived back safely this weekend, with the monsoon conditions having ensured a very speedy return journey. By all accounts Joseph acquitted himself very well indeed during the voyage, despite being the youngest member of the crew at age 18. His driving of the boat was excellent according to skipper Amelia Ralphs. When the crew were welcomed back to Hong Kong this morning by parents including Joseph’s mother, the strong bonds that developed between crew members during the trip were evident. Joseph showed his Mum, Sailability Instructor Jesse, and Sailability Volunteer Andrew around the boat, including all the inner working spaces, the generator, pumps, navigation equipment and the galley. It was clear that he’d learned a LOT ! It looks like this has been a real milestone for Joseph and his sailing development, and we’ll share more on Linked In after we have a “proper chat” with him soon. In the meantime, well done Joseph and welcome back!
