𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 – 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗜𝗗𝗦 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 A remarkable new case of long HIV remission has been reported at the 25th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2024) now being held in Munich, Germany, marking only the 7th patient ever to be cured (or potentially cured) of HIV. The case raises optimism for an eventual cure, but at the moment HIV remains a critical global health issue. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 630,000 people died from HIV‑related causes in 2023. HIV treatment involves the use of combined antiretroviral therapy (ART). Currently, more than 30 antiretroviral drugs are available, including several fixed-dose combinations, which contain two or more medications from one or more drug classes in a single tablet. These drugs have made HIV infection a manageable chronic health condition, enabling people living with HIV to lead long and healthy lives. WHO, UNAIDS, and the Global Fund are working together to end the HIV epidemic by 2030, aligning their strategies with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.3. Key to achieving this goal is not only medical advancements, but also ensuring access to testing, treatment, and prevention for everyone, while also eliminating stigma and discrimination. 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: Sandpiper’s multi-award-winning health practice combines expertise in public policy, patient advocacy, and consumer health communications. 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗽𝗶𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 In recent years, consumer sleep-tracking technology such as smart watches and phone applications has boomed in popularity worldwide. This has opened the door for a “big data” approach to studying sleep and transforming our understanding of how sleep impacts our health. Armed with millions of hours of sleep data gathered from consumer technology, researchers can study and test the variables affecting sleep quality, and how sleep affects mental and physical health. Traditionally, sleep apnoea – a disorder that can lead to heart problems and depression – is diagnosed through a night of sleep in a laboratory, making the process inconvenient, expensive, and, until now, under-diagnosed. While developers of consumer sleep-tracking technology say their devices are not intended to replace professional sleep clinics, devices such as Samsung and Apple's smart watches are blurring the line, having received approval to detect sleep apnoea from the US Food and Drug Administration. Researchers have also highlighted that sleep data consistently tracked on consumer devices each night provides a more comprehensive dataset than single-night diagnostic studies. At Sandpiper Health, we are always excited to hear of developments in the healthcare space and we look forward to seeing how this technology changes the approach to sleep health. Our Sandpiper Health team recently held a communications training session for patient groups in Singapore, in partnership with the Singapore Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (SAPI), to share valuable knowledge about how patient organisations can effectively connect with their audiences and engage with the media. We hosted ten participants from six patient organisations across a wide range of disease areas, covering topics such as the Singapore media landscape and its ways of working, how to develop and deliver key messages, and how to craft compelling content on social media. It was a great pleasure meeting everyone, and thank you to all our attendees for a lively, engaging discussion! #PatientAdvocacy #PatientEngagement #SAPI #Singapore Weeling Quek, Christina Teo, Xu Meng, Adelene Tan, Sarada Chellam, Beatrice Hua, Petrina Loh, Jia Rong Chew
