Boosting composting in Noth American urban agriculture The #SUAVE project – Stimulating SME-s in the new Urban Agriculture Value Chain for sustainable growth in Europe – has received funding from the EU’s Single Market Programme. It aims to support the international expansion of European SME-s offering urban agriculture solutions with strong international potential in North America. Profikomp® Environmental Technologies Inc, is proud to announce to be a Beneficiary of the #SUAVE Internationalization Lump Sum project. We used the grant to promote our international expansion through a single international mission in the USA, California. In the first phase of the project Profikomp® under the mentorship of 301' Organics, has put together an action plan to promote small scale composting within the urban agriculture community in California.   Our experts, dr. László Aleksza and Lothar A. Deyerling introduced organic waste recovery with Profikomp® Technologies in Pasadena, California and the surrounding area in early October 2024. A main point of the program was an event in Pasadena, where the Profikomp Breathable Drum® composting technology - a stand-alone, encapsulated composting solution - was demonstrated to invited visitors, like representatives from CALTECH University and a San Diego authority. The event focused on showcasing Breathable Drum Technology's role in aerobic composting, with a live demo illustrating the drum’s daily loading with typical kitchen waste. Participants tested the compost screening process, generating lively discussions on the end product’s efficacy as an organic fertilizer. Highlighting its versatility, the Breathable Drum® is designed with a PFAS-free membrane, aligning with California’s Decree 19333 for eco-friendly standards. Attendees noted its potential for integration into educational programs across kindergartens, schools, universities, and social institutions. In addition, a number of meetings, discussions and composting site visits have been arranged to promote Profikomp® Technologies with NGOs, composting plant- and company managers, community organisations, and urban agriculture companies. Thanks to the #SUAVE project the visits have demonstrated that Profikomp® technologies fit with agricultural initiatives and offer a scalable model that can contribute to sustainable urban farming efforts. 🌿 Unveiling the Impact of PFAS in Hungarian Composts: A Recent Analysis 🌍🔬 A few months back, we delved into the world of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), and published a study in the Hungarian Agricultural Research scientific magazine under the title 'PFASs in composts – new concerns in compost application'. PFAS are complex chemicals with a significant presence in various industrial and consumer products. 🧪 Their hydrophobic, oleophobic, and stable nature has made them prevalent, but the lack of a single definition has created confusion. Fast forward to today, and PFASs are making headlines globally due to their toxicity, persistence, and potential for bioaccumulation. 🚨 Our earlier exploration led us to conduct a preliminary PFAS analysis in Hungarian composts, focusing on biosolids, biopolymers, and manure composts. 🌿 Our findings indicate that PFAS levels were below 5 ppb, suggesting that Hungarian composts currently do not pose a critical issue. However, our commitment to scientific robustness persists, and further analysis is needed to measure concentrations in ppt. Efforts and regulations are underway to restrict PFASs in food packaging and other products. 🚫 This will be crucial in minimizing PFAS migration from these items into composts.
