In early December 2024, Octagon Precision Indonesia paid a visit to Aruna's office in South Jakarta. Octagon is a company established in 2003, primarily engaged in the industry and trade of battery-based electric motor vehicles, utilizing Industry 4.0 technology updates based on new and renewable energy sources. During the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed, marking Aruna's and Octagon'e commitment to collaborate on the development of electric motor boats for fishers. The Definitive Cooperation Agreement would further detail the cooperation mechanism. Electric motor ships are vessels assembled domestically in partnership with various stakeholders, including PLN (the state electricity company), the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and others. #SeaForAll

  • This November, Aruna was invited to speak at several international forums, particularly discussing the blue economy, seaweed cultivation, and women's empowerment, such as: 1. "Connecting Land Agriculture with the Blue Economy and the Role of Digitalization," presented at the Agri-Food Tech Expo Asia 2024 on November 20th 2. "Who Holds the Key to Growth in the Emerging Seaweed Markets," featured at the Asia-Pacific Agri-Food Innovation Summit 2024 in Singapore on November 21st 3. "The Role of Women in Fishing Communities and New Challenges," discussed at the International Conference of Fishing Communities in Jeju, South Korea, on November 25th. Representing her company, Utari Octavianty, the Co-Founder and Chief Sustainability Officer of Aruna, explained, "Before focusing on implementing the blue economy, we firstly need to address the challenges–most of it is the relatively high logistics costs." She continued, "To tackle this issue, Aruna prioritizes maintaining the cold chain during the distribution process by independently producing ice gels to preserve product quality. Furthermore, we leverage our connections to secure cold storage solutions, utilizing both government and private entities." In implementing the blue economy, Aruna emphasized that the fisheries and marine industry must begin with the fundamentals, such as consistent training for fishers and coastal communities. Utari remarked, "This is challenging and certainly requires support over a long period. It should start on a small scale, possibly at the home level, before progressing to a larger scale, which may necessitate additional equipment or more extensive technological support." For instance—when seaweed farmers are ready to expand their production, Aruna helps connect them with companies or government programs that provide support for growth and scaling. "It’s to optimize domestic seaweed production, which has reached nearly 10 million tons in 2022. Indonesia is the second-largest producer of seaweed in the world.” Utari understands the vital role women play in achieving ecosystem sustainability for a thriving blue economy. In Indonesia, it is estimated that around 42% or more of those involved in the fishing industry are women. "Women’s contributions extend beyond preparing fishing gear or managing household finances. Their involvement is not limited to coastal areas; many women hold operational roles in urban settings, work in manufacturing, or even occupy high-level positions in government. This allows them to contribute significantly to the policy-making processes related to the fisheries sector," Utari explained. Aruna is dedicated to prioritizing advocacy in all sustainability initiatives. This commitment is demonstrated through its involvement in various agendas aimed at fostering change within the fisheries and marine sectors. #SeaForAll

  • At the end of October 2024, Aruna was invited to be one of the exhibitors at the Festival Gemar Makan Ikan (Gemarikan) by the Raja Ampat Regency Government and the local Fisheries Department. With hubs in nearly 31 provinces across Indonesia, Aruna seized this opportunity to encourage people to develop a greater enthusiasm for fish consumption. The exhibition showcased coastal products and communities, reflecting the core identity of Aruna's business. Aruna data revealed that grouper and crab were the main commodities in Raja Ampat, with general production volumes of 2,488,870 kilograms and 1,729,900 kilograms, respectively, as of 2023. Unfortunately, the local community was not benefiting fully from these resources. To address this, Aruna showcased BOON (pasteurized crab) and various grouper fish at the Gemarikan Raja Ampat 2024 festival. During the event, coastal communities in Raja Ampat were also encouraged to preserve traditions like Sasi Laut, which regulated access to fishing areas. Daniel Panjaitan, one of the Aruna Heroes, explained, "Sasi Laut is a customary system that helps the community manage marine resources sustainably." He continued, "It ensures that harvesting is done responsibly by specifying the sizes of commodities that can be taken—undersized catches should not be taken. Aruna supports such customary laws that promote sustainable oceans.” Mr. Luther, an Aruna Fisher in Raja Ampat, noted, "During the harvest period, we typically have a good catch because the area is closed for a certain time until the opening ritual. This ensures a larger harvest and supports local sustainability. After the harvest, the area will close again for a year to allow marine life to reproduce." Sasi Laut is still practiced today. The fish caught is sold, and the income is usually used for community activities, such as building public facilities and organizing traditional events. Proud to be part of the fishing community in Eastern Indonesia, Aruna recognizes the value of customary law for the sustainability of marine ecosystems. Let’s enjoy eating fish to support ocean conservation and promote a healthier lifestyle! #SeaForAll

  • H.E. Hassan A. Joho, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs; Njagi, Principal Secretary of the Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries, and their staff, visited Indonesia in mid-October 2024. The visit aimed to explore cooperation opportunities in the blue economy and maritime sectors. On October 16, the group visited Aruna. H.E. Galma Boru, the Ambassador of Kenya to Indonesia; as well as Ricardo Gita Perkasa and Ratih Y. Kombonglangi from the Africa Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also took part in the visit. Recognizing Aruna's important role in Indonesia's fisheries sector, the Kenyan team expressed their interest in collaborating and exchanging experiences with the company. Farid Naufal Aslam, the Co-Founder and CEO, came with Elkana Lewerisa, the Head of Corporate Affairs, representing Aruna at the meeting. Aruna's business model focused on integrating downstream and upstream operations to promote community development in 31 provinces of Indonesia. While the initiative appeared simple, it required significant time and effort to implement. "We hope to adopt this approach from Aruna and invite them to explore Kenya's fisheries sector to understand our potential in marine fisheries and aquaculture," explained Hassan. Kenya focused on enhancing sustainability practices and benefiting coastal communities. According to a United Nations report, the Fisheries Management and Development Act of 2016 was enacted to combat illegal fishing and promote the conservation and management of aquatic resources. This aligned with PERMEN-KP No. 39 of 2019 and reflected Aruna's view. "We must unite our efforts to support ethical practices in ocean exploration," Hassan stated. #SeaForAll

  • PT Aruna Jaya Nuswantara (Aruna) has been recognized for its contribution to building a sustainable economy. This time, Aruna achieved 3rd Place in the Large Company category at Indonesia’s SDGs Actions Awards 2024. The award ceremony occurred on October 7, 2024, at the Fairmont Hotel Ballroom in Jakarta. The award was presented by Vice President (Wapres) K.H. Ma’ruf Amin. Utari Octavianty, Co-Founder and Chief Sustainability Officer of Aruna represented the company at the event. Vice President K.H. Ma'ruf Amin emphasized the importance of SDGs in his speech, stating, "SDGs are not only about meeting targets but also about creating a fair and sustainable future." "We are very grateful for this award, especially in the Large Company category, despite Aruna being a relatively new company, less than 10 years old. The award, later on, recognizes the hard work put in by Indonesian fishers and Nakama Aruna in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in their processes," said Utari. This year's Indonesia's SDGs Action Awards theme is the Linkage of Quality Education, Jobs, and Green Industry, focusing on Goal 4: Quality Education, Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. Aruna advocates for an Inclusive Economy for small-scale fishers through social protection and sustainable fisheries education as good practices for the SDGs, directly contributes to Goal 8, and supports Goal 1: No Poverty, Goal 2: No Hunger, and Goal 14: Marine Ecosystems. One of the ongoing programs is the Implementation of FIP, where stakeholders work to improve fisheries and management practices to ensure the maintenance of species, habitats, and related communities. Aruna ensures that all stakeholders, including fishers, the government, and the private sector in the value chain, understand the importance of human rights and business ethics in this process. The FIP implementation also aims to enhance the quality of fishers and coastal communities through education and training, creating a safe and healthy work environment, opening up broader market opportunities, and increasing the income of coastal communities by 3-12 times.
