We had the privilege to join the prestigious Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) Private Equity Forum in Hong Kong yesterday, 19 November 2024. Roderick Purwana, Managing Partner at East Ventures, spoke at the “Portfolio management: Venture style” panel, delving into navigating longer hold periods, balancing hands-on involvement, and fostering collaboration. Here’s what we learned from the insightful panel: 🎯 Effective portfolio management focuses on strategic advice and problem-solving, leaving the day-to-day operations of the company to their management. ⚖️ While being hands-on can add value, empowering founders to lead operational decisions creates stronger, more agile companies. 🔑 Communication is key. Founders should be transparent and communicate well with cross investors about their plans or any issues. As Roderick also highlighted, “Most of what we do is around strategy and working with [founders] to give advice... We think founders should be fully in charge of the operations.” The panel also featured prominent experts, including Ian (Yan) Zhu (NIO Capital), Shane Chesson (Openspace), and Emre Yuasa (Globis Capital Partners).
