Another great Hatch Blue Demo Day in #Singapore last Thursday and thank you Hatch Blue team: Benedict Tan 陈勇安, Wayne Murphy, and Caitriona Kelleher for inviting me, along with Mauricio Castillo from the 2023 Cohort, for the opportunity to update the Hatch Community on the progress that Living Seas Aquafeeds Pte Ltd has been making over the past year, to meet old friends, and to make new friends.

Tentang kami
Living Seas Aquafeeds is an Indonesia-based specialty manufacturer of feeds for crustacean aquaculture including shrimp, lobster, and crabs. Our signature product is our Shrimp Supplement which is in the form of a ready-to-feed pellet containing a mixture of seaweeds, mangrove leaves, and volcanic minerals. It is made through a proprietary fermentation process that releases powerful bioactive molecules that improve shrimp health, growth, and productivity.

It has been a busy month with our Living Seas Lab in Lombok, Indonesia fully built and now stocked with baby #tropical #spiny #lobsters for some feed trials of six different custom lobster feeds to overcome the biggest barrier to sustainable tropical lobster aquaculture in Indonesia- the lack of a low FCR aquafeed. Lobster aquaculture in Lombok currently requires 25 kg of sardines and anchovies to grow 1 kg of lobsters- important marine protein that is diverted from human consumption to cultivate high-value lobsters which are then exported. With a great team, a focused vision, and lots of enthusiasm and ingenuity, hurdles were overcome including pumping seawater from the rough Lombok Straits 190 meters to our tanks, and sourcing local ingredients (and some that are very unique) to make a high-quality, high-protein, lobster feed that has good attractability and water stability.

Come join us at Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2024 in Surabaya, Indonesia from July 3-5th! Living Seas Aquafeeds is exhibiting at booth 98 and we look forward to meeting up with old friends and making new friends. As an exhibitor, we have an extra full conference ticket that we would like to give to someone who wants to attend the conference and would get a lot out of the sessions and presentations but has been put off by the high admission price. If this is you, or someone that you know, please reach out to Timothy Hromatka and we will see you in Surabaya. More information is at: https://lnkd.in/gfhTWrQJ

Living Seas Aquafeeds membagikan ini
#seaweed and #shrimp in 2024. Here at Living Seas Aquafeeds in Lombok, Indonesia, I have been reflecting on my high point of 2023: participating in the Hatch Blue Accelerator 5.0 led by Hatch co-founded Wayne Murphy and thinking about 2024 with great anticipation (and a little trepidation). Another Hatch co-founder, Carsten Krome summed up some of my feelings in The Fish Site article, and since I am a real fan of Hatch, I am reposting it. Regarding shrimp innovations: "harder to gain traction, as farmers are stocking fewer shrimp and are less willing to invest in new technologies" and I see this with farmers I am trying to introduce my Shrimp Supplement to being in "survival mode" and not so keen to try new things at the moment. The positive is that seaweed-based feed products are more and more understood by people we talk to and seaweed seems to be accepted as an awesome aquafeed ingredient (true or not?). And, thus, my excitement for this year is: "On a more positive note, Krome believes that the seaweed sector is emerging as one of the few winners of the year....and... “In the medium term I envisage breakthroughs in terms of feed ingredients". I hope his 2024 predictions are correct and that I did not take them out of context. 😊
🐟We're glad to share Insights from the Hatch Blue’s Co-founder, Carsten Krome-navigating challenges and embracing opportunities in aquaculture sector, a great piece written by The Fish Site. Carsten Krome is thrilled with the substantial growth of Hatch Blue's team across the globe 🌍, all while preserving the original egalitarian structure he had planned for the company and here are some key takeaways from his perspectives: 🔹Achievements amidst economic upheaval: despite the global economic challenges, the aquaculture industry has witnessed significant achievements. Our portfolio at Hatch has navigated these times with success, with some entities even surpassing their growth targets. This demonstrates the sector's resilience and robustness 📊Slow pace of technological adoption: A notable trend in 2023 has been the industry's hesitance to embrace new technologies, particularly small holder farmers in the shrimp sector, who often don´t view new technologies as essential. 🦐 Shrimp industry dynamics: the fluctuating shrimp prices have impacted startups, especially in Southeast Asia. External factors like disease outbreaks seem to play a crucial role in these market changes, presenting both challenges and opportunities for innovation. 🌿 Significant rise of the seaweed sector: A positive note from the year is the emergence of the seaweed sector, especially in areas like biostimulants, pointing towards more sustainable and eco-friendly practices in aquaculture. 🚀 Future directions: looking forward, the industry anticipates breakthroughs in areas such as feed ingredients and oxygenation technologies. Technology platforms which enhance trading and financing efficiency are seen as the most promising areas. However, patience is key, as these innovations are expected to unfold over the next few years. 🌍 Carsten also brings into question the sustainability of farming carnivorous species and suggests a shift towards non-carnivorous or plant-fed species for better global food security. 🐟 While in terms of feed conversion, aquaculture remains more efficient than most other forms of livestock production, with significant potential for further improvements in genetics and husbandry practices. 💡We believe these insights from Carsten could paint a vivid picture of the current state and future potential of the aquaculture industry. Our outlook remains positive as we eagerly anticipate the sector's continued growth and evolution.
