Tentang kami

Sungai Watch is a nonprofit organization in Indonesia. Our mission is to protect and restore the world's waterways by develoiping and designing simple technologies to stop the flow of plastic pollution from going into the ocean. Our primary solution are the use of trash barriers and our weekly community cleanups. We believe that river serve as the vital connection between life on land and the ocean, making them a critical point of action. Find out more on https://sungai.watch/ Jaga Sungai Kita!

Update

  • Another day, and a few cleaner rivers later — Thanks to Green-Got, a French financial institution, we are cleaning 16 river points daily, stopping plastic from going into the ocean, in Banyuwangi, East Java. With their help in 10 months, we’ve collected 117,079 kg of waste from rivers. This is a huge milestone and an exciting partnership we are excited to build on and continue to grow. Thank you Green-Got for supporting our efforts to protect Indonesia’s rivers and our world’s ocean.

  • For the past four years, Danone has consistently ranked as the #1 parent company most found in our rivers in our annual Brand Audit Reports. In 2024, Danone fell to the second position of our audit partly explained by our expansion to East Java, where WINGS Group products are more prevalent than Danone’s. In Indonesia, Danone operates exclusively in the packaged water sector, mainly through their brand Aqua, and relies heavily on small-format, single-use plastic packaging, with a significant share of its pollution coming from plastic cups—a format that remains difficult to recycle in Indonesia. Although Danone is in 2nd place in our 2024 Brand Audit Report, Aqua, the water beverage brand owned by Danone, remains the #1 polluting brand in Sungai Watch’s 2024 audit analysis. We cannot keep collecting Danone’s plastic forever. The solution is not endless cleanups – it should come from real action from the companies producing this trash in the first place. Help us by sharing this video and tagging Danone & Danone Aqua below and tell them it’s time for change! Read our full Impact Report and Brand Audit Report in the link in our bio.

  • Every year, we go beyond just cleaning up rivers—we take action with the data we collect. Our annual Impact Report is packed with powerful insights. This year, the data is overwhelming. With the support of our community, we're using this data to push for accountability from brands and governments. It's time for real change. Let’s make this information work for a cleaner future. Check out our 2024 Brand Audit and read the full report in our bio. Let’s continue working together towards cleaner rivers and a plastic-free ocean.

  • 🚨 Wings Group Indonesia (Sayap Mas Utama)—one of Indonesia’s largest conglomerates—now ranks #1 as the top plastic polluter in our cleanup areas in Bali and East Java, Indonesia. After individually auditing 623,021 packaging items, we found 52,600 coming from WINGS Group and its subsidiaries. WINGS Group owns the highest number of polluting brands in the Sungai Watch audit, ranging from household laundry detergents to food products. Some of its more popular products are beverages like Ale Ale, Milku Milk, and the instant noodle Mie Sedaap. Despite its massive market presence, the company has yet to take responsibility for its packaging waste, which overwhelmingly contributes to the plastic crisis. Tag Wings Group Indonesia (Sayap Mas Utama) and tell them it’s time to contribute to cleaning up Indonesia! • And the results are in! After auditing 623,021 individual pieces of packaging we collected across our operations, we have identified the companies most responsible for polluting our rivers. These 5 brands—Wings, Danone, Indofood, Unilever, and Mayora—are leading the charge in plastic pollution, and it’s time we hold them accountable for the waste they are contributing to our environment. At Sungai Watch, we clean rivers every day, but we know that tackling plastic pollution is a shared responsibility. Governments, consumers, and corporations all have a part to play in creating a cleaner future. The companies in this year’s audit must take action now to reduce their plastic usage and commit to collecting their waste from the environment. Help us share this post and keep these companies accountable! Comment what steps you think these companies should take to help clean up our rivers? 👇 Read our full 2024 Brand Audit Report and Impact Report in the link below https://s.id/sungai_watch

  • 2024—Our Biggest Year Yet! This year has been a game-changer. We expanded beyond Bali into East Java, collecting more trash than ever before. But cleanup is just the beginning—We have also been sorting and identifying which companies are responsible for the plastic we find. Can you guess the #1 plastic polluter of 2024? 🤔 Find out in our 2024 Impact Report & Brand Audit, launching on February 19, 2025. Stay tuned!

  • 🚨 We need your help! Take a look inside one of our sorting stations, in Ketewel, East Bali. But this isn’t what it usually looks like. After our massive cleanup at Kedonganan Beach, we are overwhelmed with trash – 90 tons of it. We have therefore turned every available space into a sorting area. Now we need your help to get through this mountain of trash faster! Sorting plastic is a crucial step in stopping it from ending up back in our rivers or open dumps around Indonesia. Once sorted, we bring the trash to our washing facility before processing it for further recycling. Ready to sign up and help us? Register now through the link in our bio and help us turn Bali’s beach trash into something useful!

  • In 2024, we brought over 8,561 volunteers together across Bali and East Java to take action against plastic pollution. We see every cleanup as more than just removing trash— each cleanup builds awareness, can shift mindsets, and pushes for real change. But cleanups are not all that we do. We are working hard on tackling plastic pollution at its source by educating communities, school students, and working alongside government agencies. Our community team is growing – and one of our main goals for 2025 is to continue to build strong relationships with each community in the 10 regions where we operate 💪🌊

  • In 1 month, we have collected over 79 tons of trash from Kedonganan Beach. But now comes the real challenge: sorting it all so that it can be properly recycled and repurposed! Sorting this much waste is no small task, and we need your help! 💪 📢 Join our volunteer sorting shifts every day in February (except Wednesdays and Sundays): ⏰ Morning Shift: 9am - 11am ⏰ Afternoon Shift: 1pm - 3pm This is your chance to experience our everyday battle – collecting trash is only half the battle, sorting it is the second half. Help us by volunteering for a sorting session at our Ketewel, Gianyar Sorting Facility in East Bali, near Ubud! Click the link in our bio to register and sign up.

  • Indonesia’s rivers and beaches are drowning in plastic pollution. Every year, the problem grows— but so does our impact. Since starting Sungai Watch, we have collected over 2,815,887.74 kg of waste through 230 trash barriers and 1,633 cleanups. And we’re just getting started. With many more rivers and coastlines to protect, the urgency has never been greater. We’ve made progress in Bali and East Java, but our mission doesn’t stop there. To stop plastic pollution at its source, we’re working upstream—preventing waste from reaching the ocean in the first place. But we can’t do it alone. Your support fuels this movement. Every donation we receive helps us install more barriers, clean more rivers, and expand our impact across Indonesia. Donate now through the link in our bio, and reach out if you want to get involved in other ways. Together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution 🌊
