Beyond building a great vision and watching that brand thrive it is essential to build a family-like workplace where each member of the family grows even after the brand is no more . in 2002 PayPal was sold for 1.5 billion USD. to ebay. some of the persons who made up the "PayPal mafia " as they were called in silicon Valley are Peter Thiel, Elon musk, Reid Hoffman, David sacks, jawed Karim,Steve Chen and Russel Simmon. Each of them have moved on to founding and co-founding companies worth much more than 1.5 billion dollars, from YouTube to LinkedIn to Tesla to spacex to Yelp and many more. SPV vs. direct business angel investments Personally, I prefer to invest directly into startups, not into SPVs. Here is why. I fully understand why some startups want to pool their angels into an SPV investment vehicle instead of having them directly on the cap table. This way, they don’t have to chase signatures (for annual reports, etc.) from 10 different people. But for me as an angel, it simply makes the investment much less interesting, and I often decline to invest in startups simply because I will not be a direct investor but will be pooled in an SPV. 1. Bureaucracy/cost. There are now many providers who make it less costly/bureaucratic to set up SPVs, but the costs and bureaucracy are still there. Remember, it often takes 10 years from investment to exit – so you will pay the fees for many years. 2. Issues with follow-on investments. The SPV complicates your follow-up investments into the companies. Say you are in an SPV with 10 other angels – only 5 of you want to invest in the startup's new round (which is very common). This complicates the investment a lot. Either you need to agree on a valuation of the SPV for the capital increase (simple in theory, harder in real life when not everyone wants to invest), or you need to create yet another SPV for the new round's investments (adding further cost, bureaucracy, and complexity). 3. Lack of Liquidity. Many exits traditionally come in secondary transactions when later-stage investors/VCs want to acquire your shares in a startup. But this is much harder if you are in an SPV because the investor normally doesn’t want SPV shares; they want shares directly in the startup. This means the exit only happens if all the angels in the SPV want to sell, which often does not happen. Again, I fully understand why founders prefer working with one SPV instead of 5 angels, but from my perspective, it is just not that attractive. My advice for startups: Set a floor. Everyone who invests a larger amount than that can invest directly – smaller investors will be pooled into an SPV.

A few days ago, I posted about how I managed to earn just around $50 despite gaining over 30,000 users across 12 apps during my "12 months, 12 startups" challenge. I also shared my plan to attempt the challenge again, this time aiming to generate at least $100 in revenue from each startup. A lot of people were intrigued and expressed interest in joining me on this journey. So here I am, sharing an update about how I'm tackling the challenge again. I'll start by monetizing one of my already-published apps, MedGPT. It has already generated ~$35, so I only need to make $55 more within a month to hit my target. I'll try to reach $100 in monthly revenue purely through organic marketing, InshaAllah. This includes PH launches, ASO, sharing on socials, niche communities, doing things that don't scale, and more. For Southeast Asia’s startups, expansion is not optional. It’s a survival strategy. Especially if you don’t start from a major market, you’ll eventually find yourself starved for revenue within one market alone. For most founders, timing and execution are everything. Expand too soon, and you’re battling on too many fronts before your foundation is solid. Expand too late, and you risk losing prime opportunities to competitors building moats in adjacent markets. The sweet spot = Mastering three things: 🔹 Focus: Nail your product-market fit at home or in a carefully chosen test market. 🔹 Speed: Once ready, move decisively with insights from your domestic success. 🔹 Execution: Balance ambition with operational excellence as you scale internationally. SEA offers both incredible opportunities and unique hurdles. It’s a fragmented region where scaling means navigating vastly different consumer behaviors, regulations, and market dynamics. Some startups that have successfully scaled across the region: ⭢ Ninja Van started in SG before systematically expanding to six key markets. ⭢ Grab rapidly expanded from Malaysia to SEA. ⭢ Carousell validated its C2C model in Singapore before scaling across Asia. SEA founders can go global, but it requires balancing bold ambition with disciplined execution. 🔹 Start local, but always be thinking global. 🔹 Expand when you’re able and ready. 🔹 Exercise discipline in expansion and cut losses quickly. 🔹 Leverage the advantages of closer adjacent expansions first. I was invited by Mekari (big thanks to you guys) to share my real experiences doing transformation & automation. Things that feel underrated but contribute a significant part to company profits. Like, imagine works that you previously did in 4-5 days turns into 4-5 hours. We believe there is a lot of untapped potential in this sector and Indonesia is such a big market for the Climate theme. With a lot of Corporates and are moving into this direction too, it will be very interesting! Personally, I'm also very interested in Web3 and Blockchain. I believe this sector is going to be the future of finance. We aren’t investing in the web3 space yet though! 💼 What advice would you give someone starting out in your industry? Be humble, try to meet with as many people as you can. Be open and keep learning from others (whether it’s VCs or Founders).
