Today we send a clear message on starvation in Sudan: As the heads of global humanitarian organisations operating in the country, we urgently call on the international community to address the immense hunger crisis. We cannot be clearer: Sudan is experiencing a starvation crisis of historic proportions. People are dying of hunger, every day. Every opportunity to head-off the worst of this situation has been missed, and now the people of Sudan face a crisis unmatched in decades. Widespread death and suffering is advancing across the county. Children are starving to death. More than 25 million people – more than half the population – are suffering acute food insecurity. The people of Sudan have shown immense resilience and strength over the past 17 months: they now have nowhere left to turn. Our teams in Sudan have spoken of the huge loss of life resulting from the extreme violence that has swept the country, and now tell us that famine will likely eclipse that death toll. Staff also witness the weaponisation of food on a mass scale, in areas held by both sides of the conflict. The level of suffering endured by the Sudanese people in recent months is impossible to express with words alone. Their endurance and resilience will be in vain if we continue to look the other way. The indifference must end. See our full report, joint with Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp and Mercy Corps. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/dMGS25gU Charlotte Slente Tjada D'Oyen McKenna

While access to Khartoum is restricted, i am glad to learn that local actors are delivering life saving assistance to populations trapped in one of the most brutal conflicts; it will be extremely difficult to fend off famine, but this one of the reasons why we need all stakeholders to act immediately and empower local actors already helping whatever they can through community Kitchens. Now is the time, now is the moment. Thanks to The New Humanitarian for sharing this report.
International aid groups have struggled to access Sudan’s embattled capital, Khartoum, but mutual aid groups have stepped in, feeding hundreds of thousands of families every day through communal kitchens: ⬇️

Localization is about equality and principled approach to development and humanitarian assistance; its not suffocating Local actors trough unreasonable overhead costs or unjustifiable risks. The guarantor system put in place is not fair and should be reviewed. Full participation of local actors is not only a requirement , but a necessity. power imbalance should be addressed and the sector's colonial legacy should be discussed. this is if we want fair and equal partnership. We have seen many cases like this and it seems our colleagues in the global north are not willing to listen let alone address it.
An INGO is levying an "unjustifiably high" overhead rate of 34% on a project – while its local partners receive nothing despite implementing most of it – a study spearheaded by The Share Trust has found. It identified potential savings for “unmet humanitarian needs” of $545,000 – or 13.6% of the funding – if it was structured more fairly. #humanitarian #localization
