Congratulations to Burrenbeo Trust's coordinator Áine Bird who recently completed a PhD study which focused on evaluating the work of Burrenbeo Trust and then looking at ways of sharing it with others. The findings were applied throughout the study and Burrenbeo's national #HeritageKeepers programme has been one significant outcomes of the study. The research was supervised by Professor Frances Fahy and Dr Kathy Reilly at the School of Geography at University of Galway and was co-funded by the Irish Research Councils Employment-Based postgraduate programme. If anyone would like to know more about the study email aine@burrenbeo.com

Through our Burren primary schools programme Calf & Cuckoo, we aim to connect students to their place, environment, and community in the Burren by providing interactive school visits and fieldtrips that inspire a deeper connection to the land and encourage active stewardship. The artwork created for a competition during this programme was showcased during the Winterage Weekend Cattle Drive and the results were impressive! Thank you to all the local teachers who are taking part in creating a future generation that understands and appreciates the beauty and significance of the Burren landscape and to the Burren Perfumery for displaying this artwork during the winter months for all to admire! Congratulations to the winning classes: 1st: Carron NS 4th to 6th class – 'ABC of the Burren' 2nd: Ballyglass NS 4th to 6th class – 'A Wild Adventure' 3rd: Kiltartan NS 3rd and 4th class – 'Burrenbeo!' #LocalLearning #CommunityConnection #FutureStewards

🌳🌱 New Conservation Adventure: The Burren Ark Project Our brilliant Burrenbeo Conservation Volunteers are embarking on an exciting new initiative with the launch of the 'Burren Ark Project'! This project aims to enhance the availability of some of the common as well as more threatened native tree species of local provenance by collecting seeds directly from local Burren farms. Collection is done with the permission of NPWS and under the expert guidance of forester Bernard Carey, following ENSCONET best practice guidelines. In time, saplings grown from these seeds will be used to create new native woodlands planted through the Hare’s Corner Project. This will also help to broaden the distribution of our native trees from their Burren source, improving their survival and resilience in the landscape. Big thanks to Vinnie Keane for letting us collect seed on his beautiful farm. Would you like to get hands-on experience in caring for Ireland’s built and natural heritage, while making new friends and enjoying the great outdoors? Sign up today by emailing Karen at volunteer@burrenbeo.com! #ConservationInAction #BurrenbeoTrust #BurrenbeoConservationVolunteers #NativeTrees #GetInvolved

So we have finally dried out from what felt like the RAINIEST Cattle Drive in years! But we were absolutely in awe of the over 700 people who showed up in spite of that to celebrate this crucially important farming tradition in the Burren. We are so grateful to all the Burrenbeo volunteers and NPWS team who ensured the event ran smoothly; making sure all the people made it up the hill and down again on very rough farmland in non-stop rain, and that in the end, all the cars were able to pull out of the mud (with the help of some serious muscle power and tractor action!). For a farming event in the west of Ireland - it couldn't get any more authentic! Huge thanks to National Parks and Wildlife Service who hosted the walk on their land, our funders - FBD Insurance, CreativeIrl and NPWS Natura Community Engagement scheme who together supported the various events organized for the weekend. Thanks also to Clare Civil Defense First Responders team who volunteered on the day. Photo credits: Donal Hogan and Martin Kiely

Burrenbeo Trust is pleased to welcome the launch today, of ReFarm (refarm.ie), a new national initiative aimed at making farming for nature sustainable and scalable, while providing businesses with an opportunity to fund nature-positive actions on Irish farms in a way that can be reported on under new EU sustainability reporting directives. This is a wonderful start to our ‘Winterage Week’ as it reflects Burrenbeo’s commitment to High Nature Value farming and to taking practical, positive actions for nature. Under ReFarm, Burrenbeo Trust will partner with researchers at Trinity College Dublin and several impact investors, as well as a number of farmers - in the Burren, and nationally through Burrenbeo’s Farming for Nature network. These farmers will carry out nature-positive actions, building on learnings from Burrenbeo’s #HaresCorner project whereby landowners receive ‘hassle-free’ support to act for nature. The impact of these actions, and the feedback from these farmers, will inform research outcomes. More information will become available over the coming months at www.refarm.ie. https://lnkd.in/eDiMiegq
