It is estimated that 10% of the Irish population live with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The disease is characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. A major problem for patients with COPD are exacerbations which result in being the most frequent cause of medical admissions to hospitals in Ireland. Heart failure and sleep disordered breathing are conditions known to overlap… Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) may cause myocardial damage but on the other hand, central sleep apnoea and Cheyne–Stokes respiration (CSA-CSR) commonly occur in heart failure sufferers. As the symptoms of sleep apnoea are less suggestive in heart failure than in non-heart failure-related obstructive sleep apnoea, overnight monitoring is recommended for a clear diagnosis. Management differs depending on whether the sleep apnoea in heart failure is predominantly OSA or CSA-CSR. Since July this year, Care-Connect, on behalf of Irish Life Health, has helped numerous patients access sleep disorder screening, a diagnosis, and care recommendations within a 10-14 day turnaround period. Using WatchPAT, an FDA and CE approved home sleep apnoea test device, patients complete the sleep study in the comfort of their home, adhering to normal night-time routines. Once the test is complete, the data is reviewed by a specialist consultant and the diagnosis and recommended next steps are sent to the patient’s referring doctor.
